New/First Saw search

Thanks again everyone.

In my mind, the safety gear was a must. I didn't even question if it was going to be worth it. If I'm going to be acting the part, I might as well be safe while doing it.

slaveToHorses - I hadn't thought about wedges though, and getting my saw stuck in a tree was a concern of mine, I'll add that to the list.

Anyhow, it appears the big thing is to find a good brand in the 50hp 16"-18" and get the saw. Before i had asked for thoughts/suggestions I had the Jonsered 2253 on my list, so I'm glad to know I wasn't completely off in my thoughts. I've also added the Stihl 271 Farmboss to my list too and an probably leaning a bit that way.

I'll hope to report back

If you get your saw stuck in a tree...either before it comes down or while you are cutting it up...the only thing you will need is...yeah, you guessed it...another saw...I've got 4 chainsaws and always carry 2 with me when I cut...you never know... PS: one more "plus" for the Echo...I've got a pro Echo (CS6700...nowCS680) that I've had for literally 29 years and it still starts/runs/cuts like it was new. BobG in VA

OK. Been keeping my eye on CL in the intermediary. A Husky 455 Rancher with 20" bar has popped up. "Like New" condition, asking $200. At first glance it appears to be a decent deal. If I go take a look at it, what should I look for, besides the obvious "does it start"? The "Husqvarna" has worn off the bar (or they've replaced it) in the pictures, so I know it's gotten some use.

Edit: Link to the listing while it's still available.

Does it start, how does it idle? Does it run well or hesitate when you give it gas. When you cut, does it hesitate and bog down or does it cut strong? I'd take the air filter cover off. Make. Check the bar to see if it shows excessive wear or burn marks. If they don't maintain it, you don't want it. I'd definitely show up with a 12 inch round of wood to cut in case they don't have one. Some saws start right up then quit once they get hot. Make sure this ain't one of them

Test compression, is it hard to pull? It should be
Take the muffler off and shine a light inside to check for scoring on the piston, a sign it's been "straight gassed".
The bar looks like a replacement.

The most important part is check the seller, does he seem honest and above board?

And this is what I get for talking chainsaws on a tractor forum. :)

WoodChuckDad and newbury - Thanks.
