Hello to all. I look forward to hearing opinion of tractors and tractor activity. I just purchased 21 raw acres and am in need of a tractor for construction, road building, barn raising, mowing, and general tractory. I also have 150 acres in Childress, TX that we hunt on (best friend's family property). The tractor will be hauled there (5 hrs) a few times a year, for weekend work. I have begun tractor shopping and am overwhelmed. The budget is set and will be buying in my means. Again, I look forward to the reading and research. Thanks.

1st question to answer, how much do u want to spend? Factor in what implements you want/need.. Don't go cheap on the implements...

My advice is to figure out what kind of implements you will want to use:
Will you be pulling a disc, how many acres will u work?
Hay? Need fair amount of pto HP for round bails
Loader? How much lift capacity?
Do you want an HST? Those are usually <=60 hp

If you're gonna tow it to Childress, what kind of equipment do you have? HD trailer? Tow capacity?

You can get a lot of what u want done with 30-40 hp but based on above will help if u need more.

Budget is less than $23,000
I plan to have a 2-3 acre garden.
We will have an arena for horses, long driveway, lots of pasture.
Not sure about the hay part, yet.

The loader is the most important to me due need to move my 2200lb welding machine skid to the back of my truck on the trailer.

I do not believe the HST is necessary for me, I don't mind a standard tranny. I would like to get a 7ft mower and a box blade now (prolly get those on craigslist).

Not sure if 4x4 is worth it, new machine or used (the warranty is a factor for us), I dont care about the color.

I have a dodge dually and have yet to by a trailer. The trailer will be a deckover.

Been reading on here for hours and my head hurts.

You're good on the towing front does your budget include the new deck over and implements?

If a utility size isn't too big for your needs (arena/stalls) I would go there first and look at something around 70hp. Just my POV. You could be able to get by with 50hp but check FEL lift capacity.

My last 2 tractors have been used. Buying used will also help you get pre tier IV. My 1st was really used and knew it when I bought, put time in it to fix it up and sold for a profit. My current tractor was barely used but was cheaper than new and allowed me to afford a cab.

I believe 4x4 is worth every penny.

Especially as you begin working your garden and possible food plots in Childress.

4x4 allows you to get smaller and lighter tractors and do more.

I use my 4x4 when lifting heavy as it will lighten your rear wheels. Also when I use the FEL to scoop into a pile of material.
