I've never heard a complaint that a shop was too big, but have heard many who wish they had built bigger!

bcp brought up an important fact. If space and funds are adequate and available, adding extra square footage to your plans is definitely a good idea. You will be surprised at the amount of space that will be needed to perform the tasks involving your projects. Over the years, you will also acquire more items to store in your shop. Organization is also important. Good Luck.:)

My suggestion is one smaller area that is well built, heated, insulated, organized, tools laid out etc. Next area doesn't need to be heated but is shelving for oils, parts, tires, junk etc. Last area is largest, just open storage for tractors, equipment, projects etc.

The only thing not in my shop that I wish I had .... eyes or hooks in the concrete. Many times when I needed to chain, twist, bend, pull or tweck something I thought why do I not have something for that.

I would dig down make a footing and add rebar, reinforcement and have eyes and hooks. Level with the top of the slab.

The idea of the rebar in the floor sounds like a good one. My shop is 40 x 32 x 18, metal building. Double bay, 4 post lift capable of lifting my Massey 1440 for service and sharpening bush hog blades, also capable of handling a Ford F250 Diesel. My best liked feature is the slopped floor with a drain in the middle for washing equipment or floor any of the year. It only takes a 1 inch slope to a grate and a 3 inch drain. Make your own grate out of expanded metal and 1 inch angle iron.

blueriver,

I have installed these in several auto shop and will be installing a couple in my shop soon. I have my own boring drill and bit, but you can rent a set up to put the hole in the floor. Never had one pull out yet.
