well with the price of diesal going higher and higher I now don't see paying 5k more fore a diesal motor just to pay more for fuel.

so window sticker does not say the MPG on 3/4 ton trucks....anyone know what there are getting?

my old 7.3 Powerstroke got 18 in city. The new 6.0 I guess is around the same. I have read and talked to some people that get about 20 and some get 16. Also depends on the gears and other things. Again you will get the diesel happy owners that will say diesel forever....

If you are just driving around town or highway, forget a wiesel. If you need it get it. I had it and sold it. I can buy superduper Mobil 93 octane gas for $0.19 cheaper per gallon then dirty diesel.

Plus look at the maintance costs. Diesels do not break as often but when they do, BANG. It takes the profit delta and blows that right away.

Again this is my slanted pitch. I had a powerstroke for 4 years and my car does the same. Granted it does not sit high, 4x4, cool smeel but I get over 10 miles more per gallon, cheaper fuel and less repairs and maintain costs....I like diesel, but not that much.

Oh, diesels not not have to show MPG per some fed laws. Unless you can get it at "real invoice"....again you need to weight in more then the never ending diesel price (which will NEVER go back down).

Chucko; If I'm not mistaken, vehicles over a certain Gross Vehicle Weight rating are not required by Fed law to display fuel mileage. I can't recall the GVW, but I do know that a F-250 is one that doesn't require it. I had a 5.4 in my '99 250. With a Haulmark 7X14 trailer in tow I was down to 6 mpg and really didn't want to drive over 65 with it. I had a trac-loc rear end that even required 4.10 gears, that is the only gears I could that year. After a trip to Denver and back, that truck was history. I now have a 7.3 Stroker that I'd never trade for a gasser. The best I ever got with the 5.4 was 14mpg. Thats the worse I get with what I now have pulling my tractor/trailer where ever I want at 70 mph. And I mean 70 mph. I might not be smart, but I'm not a fool either. If you are just lightly loading your vehicle, the 5.4 will probably work. If you move heavy loads, forget it. The megabucks extra for a Stroker may or may not pay for itself, I don't look at it like that. If dragging alot of weight, the only choice is the stroker. Consider what you'll be using the truck for, and decide as YOU see fit.

Now to get back to the original question, you probably expect around 14-16 mpg with the 5.4. Good luck with whatever route you go. My statements about the 5.4 I had are true to MY experience. Maybe someone else has had a happier experience. Diesel versus gas is a lot like arguing Ford versus Chevy versus Dodge, it all comes down if your happy.

Took delivery of an '05 F350 4x4 SRW 6.0 auto two weeks ago tomorrow. Only have about 500 miles on it, and the first tank of fuel was 15.7 mpg. I also have an '04 Excursion 4x4 with the 6.0 and it's averaged just a touch over 17 in 7000 miles.

my friend has f-350 4 door diesel and gats low 20s mpg and let me tell you he has one heavy right foot. once you put a super tuner you get more power and better fuel mileage.

diesel is cheaper to refine then gas yet cost more and that makes me mad./forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

The price of diesel always fluctuates. For the most part diesel is almost always cheaper than regular gas. For some reason it will occassionally go above gas but not often. I'm sure it will soon be below gas again. I sure wouldn't use that as your sole criteria.

As far as mileage with a SRW f-250 you should get 18-24 on the highway and 12-18 pulling. If you are going to be doing much pulling it's the only way to go. If you don't pull not really much sense to get one unless you just really want one. It's kind of like getting the V-10 or a BMW or Mercedes or a Cobra Mustang. A Ford escort will get you there and back but how cool do you want to be. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

John Day is right on the window sticker mileage. It has not one thing to do with being a diesel. Trucks over a certain weight are not required to post the mileage. Usually half ton pickups mileage is posted but 3/4 and 1 ton pickups it's not posted whether it's gas or diesel.

Chucko,

I'm about to order a new SuperDuty as well. I'm leaning toward the PSD, despite the more expensive cost of the fuel.

Reading some of the replies to this question on truck-specific sites (ford-truck.com, thedieselstop.com, etc.) I used 15 MPG for the diesel, and 11 for the 5.4 for comparisons.

One factor to look at is resale. A 99 F250 diesel has a blue book value of around $4K more than a comparably equipped gasser.

As others have said, the gas vs. diesel "discussions" get pretty animated and not nearly as cordial this site. At any given time, there are 3 or 4 active threads beating the subject to death on those sites.

When it comes down to it, buy what you want, justify it later. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I agree cowboydoc; however, since I got rid of my truck 2.8 years ago, diesel has NEVER been cheaper then gas in that time... ever . In the past 6 months diesel is over superduper in price CT and MA. Diesel was cheap in the last 90's then it has gone wayyyy over priced. As with the fuel market, the days of it being cheaper then gas I think are over. Also 6-months of high prices do not feel like a lot, tell that the the rigs owners or people in these PSD/Cummins that put on a lot of miles. It adds up real quick..

I had my PSd for hauling my tractor and bike and it was not worth the upkeep to have it. Granted my Lexus is not my F350 PSD but again I look at the money I saved on swithing; I can pay for my gas and my wifes (93 oct) and BX22 fuel for LESS then how much I was going through in one month with my F350 PSD. Never mind the fuel filter every 6 months at $12 (at that time) and all the other fluids.

The cheapest it has been in my state or (MA) or CT is equal to the cheapest gas. Most of the time it is between mid and high test prices. True, I would not base my $37K truck on it but you are the guy putting in weisel juice at a super price.

Gomez- Another I agree that blue book is more then in a gas. ....But again you pay more upfront so the delta is about equal. Example, f350 PSD used 15K and gas F350 is 10K. Sure it looks like a lot but the diesel is about a 4 to 6K option, so the “more value” is really out the door. Also the value of any car/truck is only worth what someone will pay.

All depends on where you are. Here in N.Calif, at least in the greater Sacramento and outlying areas, it's about $2.35+, runnin between mid grade, and in some places more than premium.

Calif fuel prices, in general are high though, not just diesel... We get the low emission Ca only gas and fuel that has a "special" mix.
