New CC 2544!

Just got my new 2544 this afternoon after exchanging my 1046. All I can say is WOW! This thing is a BIG step up from the 1046 (and I thought that was nice...).

I did like the 1046, but just couldn't pull attachments like I wanted to, so the dealer let me swap for 10% restock, which I was happy to pay.

The only question I have regarding the 2544 is whether or not it is normal for the engine to shake a bit when shutting down (side to side). I never noticed the 1046 doing this, but I imagine it may be due to the horizontal piston orientation.

Other than this small question, I could not possible be more impressed. This thing is built like a tank. It is also quite a bit quieter than the 1046, which I thought was interesting. It also has a much more powerful sounding exhaust note (this baby Growls!).

Excellent machine, and thanks to everyone on this board who helped me decide to switch up to the 2544!

The manual recommends placing the 2544 at half throttle before turning off the engine. This seems to have stopped the problem for me. Really enjoy this machine.

Thanks. I've only run it twice now, but will try that out tomorrow. So you were getting some "shimmy" when you shut it off?

Yes, this called dieseling, after letting it run for 30 to 40 seconds at half throttle the problem stopped. Have own my CC for about a month and have put 18.5 hrs on it. Mow 2 acres for myself and 1.5 acres for my father and 1.5 acres for my father-in-law. Also pull dump cart with 15 gal spot sprayer.

Yep, it feels like a horrible thing to do, but you have to throttle up the newer kohlers before killing the ignition. They will diesel/afterfire/bang nearly every time if you dont. You can s/d at idle if you quickly flip the throttle lever up as you kill the ignition. Tripping the seat switch on the fly will result in a BANG! as well. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Kohler has been made aware of this, and the throttling up was the answer. Kohler Command 16 on our Craftsman still pops from exhaust at shutdown even when throttled up. It's not harmful, just freaky! The older tractors did not do this. Why? They used larger mufflers on the exhaust system that stayed cooler. What happens when you shut the engine off with these newer tractors with smaller mufflers fuel is still flowing through the carb into the engine after the ignition is cut while the engine still rotates. That fuel than purges from the exhaust valve(s) into the muffler where the intense heat of the muffler is hot enough to ignite it and you get the backfire/pop. The fuel mixture will be leaner when throttled up, not allowing so much gas into the engine at shutdown which stops the backfiring and/or shakes.

I was glad SEW included a muffler for my engine kit that was every bit as HUGE as the old Kohler KT muffler- you can shut down at any speed you want without hearing the 4th of July celebration /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

As good as the 2544 is, there are just certain things with these new machines that they are not going to change back to being the way they were in the past, especially where it involves more metal such as for a bigger muffler.

When you are ready to shut down the engine after mowing, it is a good idea to let it run at about half throttle for a 3 -5 minutes just to let the temperatures inside the engine stabilize some. This practice will increase the life of your engine and will minimize the popping/banging during shutdown. About half throttle seems to be the best because you still need to keep air moving over the motor and if you go to idle, the cooling air is substantially cut back. Also...you will probably notice that shaking disappear some after the motor is broken in some. Give it about 10 hours or so and see what happens. Don't forget to change your oil and filter at 5 hours as is recommended in the owners manual.
