My Dad would not allow me to be afraid of a cow when I was a kid. He said, "You know she'll come at you with her head down, and if you just kick her nose, she'll stop." Well, it always worked, but there were times when I wasn't so sure. But he told me to just stay away from bulls because they'd run right over you whether you kicked them or not.

Most of the time, I use 5 strands of barbed wire on T-posts. I've got a couple of lots behind the barn that I used woven wire topped with 2 strands of barbed wire, but other than that, everything is barbed wire.

I have cattle and 1 horse, and have not had any problems with animals hurting themselves. Anytime that a cow REALLY wants to, they can push through a barbed wire fence and go where they want to.

We had horses growing up, and always had barbed wire fences, with no ill results. I don't doubt that horses get into barbed wire and harm themselves, but I would chalk that up to natural selection at work. I'm firmly convinced that the only animals dumber than horses are goats...and maybe people.
