I also just acquired a new Boomer 40 and I live just outside of Palestine.

Has anyone with a Boomer 40 or other models just under 40 HP PTO used a 84" finishing mower? I'm debating over the 84 which needs 40 plus versus a 72" which is right in the power band of a 40hp and might mow faster. The objective is to decrease the time spent mowing, naturally. If I have to run slower with the 84, might not be worth the extra foot per pass.

The 40 would run an 84" finish mower with ease.
My tractor is 34HP and 28.3 HP at the PTO, and it runs an 84" rear finish mower with no problem.

I bought a 6' finish mower last year to mow around the house and barns. This year I bought a 50" ZTR as I did not like the uneven grass from the 6' finish mower. Any dip or slope causes a high or low spot along the 6' cut path. If you cutting area is perfectly smooth a 6' or 7' might work but I would try it out first to see if you like the appearance after you mow.

The ZTR is faster and easier to operate around obstacles. I can mow the acre around the buildings in 30-45 minutes with the ZTR. By the time it takes to unhook the cutter, readjust the 3 point hitch, hook up the finish mower, mow, unhook the finish mower, and rehook the cutter I can mow with the ZTR and run the weedeater around the buildings. THe ZTR will mow taller and thicker grass than the 6' finish mower behind my Boomer 8N and adjusting the cutting height is much faster, just move the lever versus changing the shims on each caster of the finish mower.
