The small two stall barn I built this summer, is finally getting a couple of occupants. The horse didn't make it to see the completion and no decision was made on what to do with it, until this weekend. These two Jersey bull calves were in the NH Dept. of Agriculture Weekly Market Bulletin for $40 each. These two will be pets and live as long as Nancy takes care of them. She has wanted cows ever since we moved here and for some reason, wanted bulls. Well, we got them now.

Nice looking Pets:) . Brought back memories of my Grandfather who farmed beef and dairy cattle, and crops as well. When he slowed down some after reaching his mid 70's he still had a small herd of beef cattle that were treated more like pets. Every once in a while when we would take one the cattle to the butcher we always knew the name of the animal.

All calves are cute. But by the time they are yearlings, you may have your hands full with bulls, especially two together. Good luck.:)

That was what I was thinking as well. She wanted to keep them whole, but the vet advised her against it. I guess we'll see soon enough!
I always thought they were best when packaged, labeled and stacked in the freezer. I already suggested "chuck" and "Roast" would be good names, she doesn't care much for my ideas:rolleyes: .

Please ease the load on our already overburdened health care system & get them cut or crimped :)

We'll rely on our vet as to when.

Started a small turnout area for the little guys. This is not a normal January project. We should have more frost than we do. Currently 16* with gusting winds, perfect day to start fencing  .
Its only 30' out from the barn and will be just 20' wide, same as the barn. We'll put in a gate and fence the field this spring. I'll put in two rows of electric tape on the inside of the rails. I used a pick to start the holes and then just used the old posthole digger. Suprisingly there is only a couple of inches of frost. If I had started earlier in the afternoon I'd be done but only got going around 3:00. I'll finish it tomorrow.
