Bird,
I guess now that they have horns on his plane, Hilsboro will go ahead with the plans to build that 15 story high set of horns over I35. Did you see the picture in the newspaper? Noboby can say that Texans think small /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif. Maybe stupid sometimes but not small.

Randy, I live about 25 miles from Hillsboro, so we shop there frequently, but I must have missed something; haven't heard of any such plans.

I think those things on the front are Goretex spoilers/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I was stationed at Bergstrom AFB during the Johnson years and they used to spray the grass on the side of the runway green if Lady Bird was on AF 1 when it came in. I also heard she was behind the fire trucks in Austin painted white. Bird are they still white?

Al, I don't know whether Austin still has white fire trucks or not. Several years ago, someone determined that red was not as highly visible as lighter colors, so Dallas, along with a lot of other places, started using chartreuse trucks. The color may have been more visible than red, but it seems people just didn't recognize them as being fire trucks, so I think everyone is going back to the old original red trucks./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Bird, The idea for chartreuse fire trucks came from Europe. When I was in Germany in 74-77, The German and other European countries I visited all had Chartreuse trucks and other emergency vehicles.
It's been so long since I've been to Austin, I don't know about the color of their trucks either. As far as that story goes, I don't doubt it. At least at one time Lady Bird owned a big piece of that town. When she whistled, Austin danced.

Bird,
It was an article in the Ft. Woth Star-Telegram and it was talking about a monument being planned to span over Interstate 35. It was a pair of horns(Longhorns) 408 feet long and the the tip of the horns would be as tall as a 15 story building. It was to honor the cattle trail drives and of course be a tourist attraction/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif.
That just what we need down here all of those orange guys who love to push snow/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif coming down to see a huge monument over I35. I can see all of the wrecks now, watching a monument and not the road. Hillsboro was trying to get it built by 2004 and I am sure you can send them a donation to help build it/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif.
Have a great and happy New Year.

Randy, they just got through rebuilding the courthouse that burned a few years ago (mostly with donations). I hadn't heard about the longhorns, but don't think I'll be sending any donation./w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Randy, Gee just when I was starting to think San Antonio had cornered the market on building dumb things. And what do they say might go in these giant horns? A Mc D's, or one of those combo taco bell/pizza hut/KC fried chicken places.

Dont know if anyone cares, or remembers how it got started but the fire trucks I saw in Austin were white with a red stripe in the center.. Heck of a Party town....

John,
Thanks for the report back, 30 years and still white...Hmmmm, maybe this is old enough to be a "history" question. I don't have any idea where you might find a TEXAS HISTORY BUFF/w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif
