Was supposed to get new jd4100 today, dealer called and said mower deck lift did not work and needed a new part. I hope I did not make a mistake with the 4100 in terms of problems. Should I be concerned with quality? Where can I buy a rear york rake that can also double as a rear blade?

Carl, look on the bright side... at least your dealer took the time to notice and correct the problem! I suspect you'll thoroughly enjoy your 4100 when it arrives.

I know King Kutter rakes and blades use the same frame and I think I saw where you can buy only the blade (or rake) to swap. This is probably true of most makes but you'd want to check the ease of swapping versus the ease of changing the whole three point implement. Good luck on that new machine!

Carl,

I had a problem with the setup on my JD4700 and FEL. The dealer should have caught it BEFORE delivery which is when the SalesDude and I found the problem. Kinda hard to miss the problem when the FEL fell off the tractor!

My problem was with the mechanic who did the setup not JD. The Dealer did everything and I mean everything to fix the problem to my satisfaction. AND without me having to pitch a fit. Unless the dealer is playing some game, I think this is good news. You really don't want the tractor delivered with a problem.

As I was signing the papers to buy my tractor the SalesDude asked why I picked JD and his dealership. I told him price/performance AND most importantly I felt if I had ANY problems they would handle things correctly. Four days later I was able to put this to the test.

And I'm very, Very, VERY happy with my dealer. I made the right choice.

Hopefully you did as well. Time will tell. If the mechanic who did my setup had been doing HIS job correctly I would not have had the problem I had. My problem was not JD quality but mechanic quality. Sounds like you mechanic is doing his job.

Hope this helps...
Dan

I've been very happy with the quality and performance of my 4100. Use front weights when doing any heavy ground breaking tasks with a 3 pt. implement. It really improves the performance. I have a Landpride rear blade which can have a rake section interchanged with the blade. Landpride is good quality, but the savings over going the interchangeable route and just buying 2 implements is only about $100-150. So it's up to you if the hassel is worth this much money.

I've had a 410 HST since last april and I love it. have a FEL, belly mower, box blade and bush hog. Its never missed a beat. When you change the oil for the first time, the manual is not right, it takes only a little over 2 qts.
Depending on where you live, Agri-Supply of NC has some good prices on after market implements. Word of warning, if you bush hog in heavy brush, keep an eye on the "ring" pins on the belly mower lift, they will get pulled off and the linkage will drop on the gorund. i replaced them with cotter pins.

Unfortunately, that is the downside of mass-production - occassionally a problem sneaks through. Look at the upside, though - without mass production, we would not be having this discussion as owners of 4100's! The day I was supposed to have my 4100 delivered, I called the dealer and he told me that they had found an oil leak - near the rockshaft control. OMG, what visions of lemons danced in my head...I once had a Ford Pinto that I sold for a repair bill. But since getting the tractor, I've worked it HARD, and no more problems. I'm very impressed with the capabilities and the quality of the tractor - so much so that I now have 10 different attachments for it. Someone else pointed out in here that you should be glad the dealer caught it - and he/she is right. Not only did you order a very good tractor, but it looks like you also lucked into getting a good dealer to go with it! Have lot's of fun with your new tool - and many years from now, you can pass it on to someone deserving. Dave Wells

Carl:

I just got my new 4100 last weekend after about a week's delay. Seems there was a hangup with the 3 point hitch hydraulics that needed to be resolved. I don't think this has anything to do with the quality of the tractor. I would also rather the dealer check everything out and find problems before delivery.

I am curious as to the price you paid. I have seen a range of prices on the board and really can't believe some of them. I really shopped around. I bought the JD 4100 with automatic, turf tires (ballasted), 410 loader and 60" belly mower for $17,300 with tax, delivered.

I live in Northern VA and shopped around to all the local dealers. This was the best I could do. From what I could see, it looks like the dealers price these tractors at 12 to 15% off list.

Just bought (01/10/01) a new JD 4100 4x4 HST turf tires with 410 loader and a Kelley B600 backhoe (with extra pump set-up) for $18,500.00. I too "shopped around" and found this to be the best price. NOTE: Live in RI and purchased the machine in southeastern Mass.

jd4100hoe,
Congratulations on your new investment.
I was wondering why you purchase in Mass instead of RI,was it do to the tax.

Have sister lives in Greenvill,RI and when I visit I can't believe the prices down there. /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif
Like they say it all comes out in the wash, /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif even up here in the pucker brush.
