Finally got my 3005. Been reading all you guys for months, and asking around, etc., ultimately the checkbook and gut feelings made the decision-hydro/gear, bigger/smaller/, JD? vs all others. Also, we have a real good dealer nearby-super nice, super helpful, great service and parts dept. Anyway, I have a 10 acre piece thats mostly meadow that needs maintaining and upgrading, and I think this new machine will be up to the task. I got the beefed up bucket with hooks welded on (thanks to TBN advice), also a set of pallet forks-used them 10 minutes after the tractor arrived to move several large objects (one pallet with my new chain harrow setting on it, and a stack of plywood-only fifteen sheets, but it was easier than me doing it by hand!) , also got a landpride 1558 tiller (used), and a JD 403 brushog, (also used.) Now with the exception of a post hole auger, I have most of what (I think) I'll need for a while anyway. I did 2 sections of the pasture with the chain harrow easter sunday and it was indeed a miracle.
The comedy of the day was me on my new tractor (with R4's) approaching the one low muddy spot and deciding I'd probably make it through, only to get smack in the middle and stop-all wheels loaded smooth with nice brown mud. Finally took the harrow off, locked the rear (it helped I think? but with the tires so goobered up, probably not) drove out of the mud hole, turned around and hooked a chain on the bucket and got the harrow out that way.
I will send pix soon, but bottom line, I love this machine-don't mind shifting, and like the hand throttle.
Thanks again to all you guys for your helpful info.

TBN rule clearly state new tractor purchases must have pics to follow.
Congrats on your new toy.:thumbsup::thumbsup:

You will learn to like that tractor more and more as you get accustomed to it. I have had my 3005 for a bit over a year now and really like mine. All my tractors have been gear models (Ford 8N, New Holland TC30) and I prefer it that way.

You will find that these machines have their limitations, bu you will also find ways to work within those limits.

Just remember to work safely, and maintain it according to the schedule.

Good post....and welcome to TBN!! The weight and power limitations of the 3005/790 help to keep me outta trouble sometimes.....not a bad trait of a "well balanced" machine. :thumbsup:

Congratulations on that new 3005! Good machine all around and the other folks have made good pertinent comments. This is probably the 4th generation of that design (goes back to the mid-1980's). There's a lot of parts interchangability so parts should never be a concern...but it's unlikely you'll ever need any other then filters and lightbulbs.

BTW, I think Deere still sells that vertical stack kit if you want to make your 3005 more "manly"!

Thanks Boys, pics will follow soon, I didn't get in the house till dark-moving a woodpile/chain harrowing my pasture/moving the cows scratch pole, scraping up last years manure for the garden, maybe I'll get a chance tomorrow. I am starting to get the hang of the loader tho, which takes a little time. Luckily I have plenty of things that I need to do around here with it, so I'll get lots of practice...
