Well, thanks to all the great info from this forum, I took the plunge and took delivery yesterday of my B2710 w/ 751 Great Bend backhoe. I had the dealer attach a Rankin thumb. I'll add a few pictures of it to follow. I put about 30 minutes on but my wife put on about 4 hours in landscaping jobs. Everytime I turn around, she's on it. Thats the price I pay for her letting me get it.

Here is the thumb in the extended position. It has two extended positions and folds up out of the way when not in use. I think it will come in handy when I start that rock wall project.

Here is the thumb and bucket at work. The tree is a 7' alder thunk. No match for the hoe but something to give an idea of how it works.

Nice setup. You'll love that thumb! I've got one and LOVE it! Works great on rocks. Also works well if you got a small brush pile just grab the pile pick it up and drive away to the burn pile. Does your thumb have two angles or is it just open and closed? Also were do you store your "bar" for the thumb. Looks great. Best of luck.

Jim,

You sure are going to get a lot of work done with that rig, if you can get the wife off of it./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif I would sure like to have one of those thumbs on my B21. Mind if I ask what the cost of the tumb was?

Wow. Thanks for all the feedback. I’ll try to answer some of your questions.

Derek – (Rowski) – The thumb does have two positions in addition to the folded (stowed) position. The bar slides into itself and remains attached to the thumb and hoe in the stowed position. If you look closely to picture #4 you can sort of see it.

M. Sullivan and Mark Vagle – As to price, the initial quote was about $5500 for the hoe and $600 for the thumb, including installation. When I started negotiating, we were talking the entire package price and didn’t get into individual components. So I don’t know what percentage I talked him down on just the hoe and thumb. For info, the Kubota hoe listed for about $1100 more than the Great Bend. Another thing is that when I checked the forum and compare prices that many of you pay back east and in the mid-west, we seem to pay more here in the Seattle area (all those Microsoft millionaires driving up cost of living). You can probably get it significantly cheaper elsewhere. I got one quote for a B2710 with Kubota hoe for $22,300. I called four other local dealers and none would attempt to beat it. As I visited the different dealers, they didn’t seem to be hurting for sales. I finally went with my favorite dealer (not the cheapest, but close) and the Great Bend backhoe to get the price lower. I’m happy with my selections so far.

Another note about the hoe, it is the frame mounted version. They also make a 3-point that is a little cheaper. Also, I found a great use of the thumb. When you clear land around here, you have to move fast or you’ll soon have a alder grove where you didn’t want one. The alders are like weeds, grow very fast and are a pain to pull. I Back the tractor up to them, swing the boom into them, bending the saplings in between the thumb and backhoe bucket. Close the bucket on the thumb and rip them out like nothing. No digging needed.

Congrats on the new tractor. That thumb sure looks like it would be darn handy. I'd really like to have a backhoe on mine someday.

Jim,

Nice photos.

I will be getting a backhoe but am still trying to decide which one. How does your Great Bend compare with the 4690 BH from Kubota? Just as powerful, about the same reach, pump connects to rear PTO, etc? Do you use a mid-mount mower deck with the frame mounted BH? I like the idea of a frame mount, but it seems that is incompatible with a mid-mount mower deck.

Thanks.

Bob.

Bob, Thanks for the questions. As to the comparison between the GB 751 and Kubota 4690, here is a link that has both specs listed side by side

http://www.jenningsequipment.com/kubotab.htm

The GB 751 I have uses the tractor hydrualics and does not use it's own pump. You can order the hoe with it's own PTO driven pump. You can also get it with a three point mount as opposed to the frame mount. I don't think you can mid-mount the mower with the frame mounted version.

As for which one, I think either would make you happy. I really like mine so far. Good luck.

Gudday from downunder, Verrry nice rig, tractor's the wrong color for me though,my preference is blue but each to his/ her own I guess. I like the 'thumb' it along with the backhoe would be real handy for me as the wife is a keen gardener and we have a lot of rocks on our farm and it would make life easierfor me building rock walls around gardens. Thankfully the wife has given up tractor driving as our place is very steep in places and she is apprehensive about the 1920 N/H says it's too complicated- that's her excuse anyhow.Welcome aboard, they are a terrific bunch of people, and knowlegable too. Kerry.

Thanks for the response, Jim.

Can you tell me the difference between the dual cylinder swing (on the GB) versus the single cylinder chain swing (on the Kubota)? Also, what are the bucket and crowd cylinder?

Sorry about the delay in getting back to you. The swing cylinders control the movement of the boom (and entire BH) to the left and right of the tractor centerline. For instance, if you are digging dirt directly behind the tractor, you would activate the swing cylinders to swing the boom/bucket off to one side to dump the dirt.

The dual swing cylinder has a cylinder on each side of the boom to push / pull the boom in the desired direction. The single swing cylinder style has one cylinder connected to a chain at the base of the boom. The chain wraps around a cog on the boom. The movement of the chain back and forth swings the boom. Picture the rear cog and chain on a bicycle.

As to which one is better, I don't know. I hear the single cylinder chain swing has a little less side to side power and could possible be subjected to chain stretch. The dual swing has an extra cylinder requiring maintenance. The dealer said they never have problems with either style.

As for you second question, the crowd cylinder controls the up and down ('to' or 'away' from the operator) movement of the dipper stick (the arm that conects the bucket to the boom).

By the way, I just pulled a 15" alder stump with the hoe in about an hour. It would have taken a short time had I not had to carefully manuver the tractor on a hillside to avoid tipping. That stump would have been a two day project for me in my pre-backhoe days.

Jim,

I thought that might be what was meant, but since I am new to backhoes, I wanted to be sure. I am not sure whether dual cylinders or single with chain is best. I will talk to my Kubota dealer (who also supposedly carries GB) about what is best. I will also ask him about the Rankin thumb. That really looks like a good idea to have.

Thanks for the posts. They are very informative and helpful.

Bob.
