I wouldn't put too much stock in what a salesman says as many (most) of them barely know the color of the equipment they are selling.

The salesman and dealer staff jobs are to make sure you keep coming back so they can sell you more stuff for your tractor. They often will bad-mouth any other products and insist you have to use JD only lubes. All you are is 'money in the bank' to the dealer.

Makes you wonder how good their oil is if they insist you change it after only 10 hrs of use. Do you take you car or truck back to the auto dealer after 100 miles for an oil change? All least the have some ethics, the powersports dealers want your money and they will say and do anything to get some more of it anyway they can.

I been running 100% synthetic in my 2010 X728SE since about 5 hrs. The dealer strongly recommended I wait till 50 hrs before installing synthetic oil but I told him that was bs. My car came with synthetic oil and every Corvette since the 1990's has comes with, and requires synthetic oil.

I Will put synthetic early in this tractor's life, after all it does not hold much oil, might as well go for the good stuff it will be easier to start in the cold.

Like others said recheck your book. I have the 1026R. JD wanted the first engine oil change @ 100 hours. After the first change, its every 200 hours or annually. The hydraulic oil/filter get changed @ 50 hours.

I doubt it has anything to do with the oil breaking down, its to remove all the swarf and crap from new parts wearing into each other. Of all the new engine driven/ mechanical items with gears or parts that wear and hold oil, I always change the oil out sooner than recommended the first time. Everytime its a very distinct difference in particulate from the post oil changes all with normal intervals. Will It hurt the engine? Debatable I suppose, the filter should be catching anything big enough that would harm the engine. I have found large chunks of casting swarf in element style filters from many many new cars on their first oil changes, again, the filter caught it so no big deal. I just like the piece of mind knowing its the best I can do for the engine and doing it yourself is a cheap insurance.

AAM recommends changing oil their axles pretty early too, something like 500 miles then dump the oil, and they suggest not towing anything in that timeframe either. I changed mine in my truck at a few thousand and the amount of metal that was in the oil was pretty staggering at that mileage.

Thanks for the info, I bought a box blade today and will be able to give this little Yanmar a little work out before I change the oil for the first time.
You are wright the parts have to wear in to place ,and then the filter should catch the bigger pieces and the oil the real fine stuff I will change early ,
cheap compare to an engine in a few years.

I've heard it said that 90% of all of the total normal wear on engine parts comes during the first few hours of operation, as all of the moving parts work in together and wear off the high spots. That's the reason for a quick first oil change. After that, if you keep to the recommended oil change regimen and the right oil type, you should have very little additional wear to the moving parts.

On my TDI VW the oil change is at 10,000 mi. Thats THE RECOMMENDED oil change interval . I know it's apples and oranges but maybe newer engines require/allow longer periods between services say it's part of the new use requirements.

Oh forgot to mention it but the dealership salesman said my first service is at 200 hours. I will look at the manual and check again. Ok checked JD OPERATORS MANUEL 1023E & 1025R (NOVEMBER 2012), front of manuel pages ii and iii the servicing needs as far as what page to go to. Pages 08-1 and 08-2 cover service intervals, on 08-1 at 50 hours change transmission oil and filter and clean transmission suction screen nothing about engine oil or filter Salesman was wrong. On page 08-1 every 200 hours change engine oil and filters, transmission oil and filters etc etc. Maybe this is where a possible question is in our minds. They want transmission fluids-filters changed at 50 hours no mention I can see for engine at that interval. I will say I haven't read the manual cover to cover but I did not find engine oil change earlier than 200 hours service. Just my two cents worth, hey have a good day and a better tomorrow.

So I guess I read the book properly and the first mention of an engine oil change is at 200 hours maybe we are to protective of our expensive play toys ,
but I will change the oil at about 50 hours and use synthetic from their on ,that was the advice from the J D mechanic who came to mi place to correct a small mistake in the set up of mi mower deck. Worked on the machine 10 minutes and talked four an hour giving me valuable advice, hope he gets paid a lot more then the salesman because he new a lot more about machineries, and what he said made a lot of sense.
