I was thinking more along the lines of a 30" wrecking bar opening the fuel door or prying off locking caps and an Arkansas credit card. And in certain areas the demand would probably justify jacking a tanker every so often by an enterprising gang wishing to diversify from slinging and weapons trafficking.

Automatic vehicle confiscation for not having insurance in the event of being stopped for an offense or whatever would go a long way in solving the issue of not having any when required.

In Mass insurance companies are linked to registry. Must have insurance in place to register a car. If insurance is cancelled registry is notified and registration is automatically cancelled.

Thirty years ago guy came around corner in my lane. Mangled driver side of our car. We both stopped. After witnesses were gone he went to car to get 'paperwork' and drove off. Police said his registration was cancelled few months earlier after insurance cancelled for non-payment. Six month old car has full coverage so insurance company paid to get it fixed. After four years insurance got him to court. Minutes before scheduled to see judge he payment deal with the insurance company. Given his history wonder if made more than payment to them.

The automatic cancellation of registration does exist some places. Doubt if any state has the resources (manpower) to actively go after cars on road without valid registration.

It seems like it would be pretty profitable to auction off all the vehicles that were confiscated for no insurance.

I have been told that if you are stopped in Ontario for excessive speed they will immediately confiscate your car and shred it.

glad to hear your neighbor wasn't seriously hurt. lack of insurance is a problem here in California too. I have been in two accidents since I have been licensed at 16 both times hit by an uninsured motorist. I keep that part of my policies at the highest limits and it is the most expensive part of my motorcycle insurance. A local PD officer once told me that when he is dispatched to an accident it is rare for both parties to have insurance or even a drivers license.

One of my last truck driving jobs was hauling from Amazon to the airport. There was an intersection near Amazon that it was not uncommon to see a fender bender, and only one person for two vehicles. The illegals would abandon their ride when they were involved in a wreck. Its a problem still.
Add this to the fact that most of the problem drivers are drunk or stoned around here.

Stealing gas in any amounts wouldn稚 be that easy. Don稚 leave 5 gallon cans laying around. I don稚 because they still walk off.

I used to leave a 5 gal decoy sitting in plain sight. It contained a mix of old diesel, drabs of paint thinner,
odds and ends of flammable stuff. Never had a taker though.

Thats the law in Texas and still people drive without insurance. My son in law was rear ended by a woman with no insurance. Cops let her drive away in her car "because she had small children in the car"

You must show proof of insurance to get plates for a car. Having a fake insurance ID card wont do it as the DMV and all police have access to the state's insurance data base. It can get VERY expensive for someone that drives without insurance but I dont think the problem will ever go away.

In Michigan, we have about 20% of drivers with no licenses, and even more with no insurance. Of course, no license = no insurance. Some guys lose their license for failure to pay child support.

You can’t get blood out of a rock.

Yeah, it definitely depends on who runs into you. In my one accident, I got rear ended by a drunk, who went on to cause multiple other accidents.

He was a middle aged man, who lived with his father. No job, no license, no insurance. By the time he faced the judge, he had managed to find a job. The judge couldn’t bring himself to destroy this new-found livelihood, so he sentenced him to some weekends in jail, and he’s supposed to pay all our repair bills.

After a couple of months, he stopped showing up to his probation meetings, and the police were not interested in dedicating resources to track him down. I never got a thing out of him.
