Need to cut off a dead limb about 30' above ground

Now that I prob seem rational in this limb-cutting endeavor, I'll "fess up" as to how last weekend I cut off & notched the eight 16' tall 6x6 barn poles:

Now that's redneck, I love it! Can't quite tell what's on top of the tractor because of the lighting, looks like you're using the ROPS and something else to hold up a piece of plywood. I like the nylon straps holding the ladder legs- safety first I always say.

I bow to the many good ideas presented here and the OP who knows the terrain, tasks to do and his skills will surely select an option considering this.:)

Rental guy says "he thinks{" it has a 350 lb capacity. I can lift one 24' truss off the ground myself (4/12 slope), & I'm 155 lbs, no muscle-man; they're surprisingly light. So the plan is to let the lift .. lift a truss & secure it using ladders.

the way the builders in my area do the roofs is they build the entire thing on the ground. Trusses, all framing and all cross framing. This is built right inside of the building and the double trusses are blocked apart so that they will fit into the notched 6x6 or 8x8 posts. Then they bring in a small crane and lift the roof all at one time. The added cost of the crane is canceled by the time saved in framing the entire roof off of ladders, scissor lifts or nutty framers walking in the air :)laughing:  ).

they did my buildings this way..worked slick

There's the word!!

My homemade plywood roof slopes down toward the front of the tractor, so to level it & provide a big enough piece of plywood, I laid another piece of plywood on top of the roof, inserted a 4x4 across the front edge, & clamped it & screwed it at all 4 corners. Yes, the ladder is ratchet strapped to the plywood, but also has screws into the plywood to hold the feet in place. I admit I was fairly nervous pretty much the entire time, but that helped me be cautious I think ... & now it's all done & I'm alive & un-injured

I expect the boom lift usage to be much safer.

Ha-ha! ... we joked about OSHA several times! That they wouldn't come by today, since they'd never expect this kind of thing in the middle of the woods!!

One of my friends does A/C work, & his boss told him that if OSHA ever shows up on a job, just pack up & leave. Apparently OSHA can't make workers stay on site.

One more thing: We also set the two 36' long double-2x10 beams atop the posts (1 down each side). Since they sit at about 16' above ground, we strapped a 12' 6x6 into my grapple bucket (see pic), attached a beam to the end of the 6x6, & used the loader/ 6x6 to lift the beam into place. That was kinda scary! Wouldn't want anybody below that thing! It worked fine, but at that long distance from the loader, every tiny movement of the loader control moved the beam a long way ... in a situation where I needed to be able to finesse the beam right onto the notches, to then be bolted in place. Scary work, but we stayed completely out from under it - If it crashed to the ground, oh well, we can buy more lumber.

The beams, trusses & roofing metal are coming from a 24'x36' pole barn my parents took down, decided they don't need anymore, & gave to me. There are no better parents.

beppington, i bow to you as TBN's master redneck ladder rigger until someone else applies for the title and publishes compelling competing photos of multiple projects:thumbsup:

You might consider just taking down the whole tree. If the tree has one big dead limb like that, how healthy is the rest of the tree? You don't want it coming down on the barn in a storm a couple of years from now.

We had a couple of nice big trees near our horse barn. We also put gutters on the barn. Big mistake, leaves always clogging up the gutters. I took the trees out a couple of years ago, much better now.

Mythbusters used a 50 Cal automatic machine gun to cut a large tree trunk in two...another tool you could get for later use:thumbsup:

I will assume (hope) this was said in jest. Just in case someone doesn't realize, the bullets will be coming back down to earth somewhere...within a few miles!
