Need spray to kill these woody plants

My windbreak has 4 kinds of spruce trees, all about 20' tall. It is about 100'wide and 600' long. I have the same problem with junk trees growing where they are hard to get to. I have resorted to letting them grow, after-all, it is a windbreak, not a photo background.

But sometimes they grow really crooked and it appears they would fall and damage the spruce so I stick a 12" electric chainsaw deep inside the spruce tree at about waist high and cut it down and then run it through the wood chipper.

I have vertical and horizontal grapples & grub a lot of mulberries from under conifers, just pulled a ten footer from under my flowering crab. Sometimes I'll crush a skinny one with the jaw and have to grab again lower, but no needles in the face, lopping/doping, digging, or spreaying and no getting out of the seat. I'll pile 'em (also willow, buckthorn, yellow poplar, and autumn olive) and mow around heaps once or twice until I switch grapples and take several to the fire pile.

Here's what I did. I did the funnel thing with the top of a soda bottle and my hand held sprayer with 2,4-D in it. I still got spray on the spruce trees but a lot less than would be expected. I'll give it a day or so and see what happens and let you know. Thanks for the help.

Whatever those bushes/trees are, I've got to get rid of them.

I read the info on Crossbow and it's mentioned for woody growth in grassy fields. It says it could kill trees if it gets on the woody surface. The instructions are often overdone so I don't know how significant the kill trees part is.

If it's to any degree it's not what I need. As mentioned, I'm trying to kill woody-weedy things that are intertwined tightly into my spruce trees. They are important to block the wind and I can't damage them.

a friend of mine applies herbicides to plants he wants killed in areas he wants to save with a eye dropper. Nothing goes anywhere that he doesn't want it. I've never done this, but he swears by it.

I can't remember the name of what I've used. I just buy what will kill poison ivy and blackberries. It's not 2,4-D but something with more warnings on it that is designed for brush. Tractor Supply and Atwoods are the two places that I go to buy it at. But most of the time, I just buy the generic version of Round Up, and it works fine.

If you can get to the stems you can use a 25% solution of Triclopyr in diesel or horticutural oil. Just wet the stem for a foot or foot and a half. You can do it without hitting the plants you want to keep and if you do, Triclopyr is broadleaf specific.

Triclopyr only works when the plants are growing.

I would be tempted to us try using a scythe to clear weeds under those trees periodically. Disadvantage of a scythe is the need to sharpen frequently and peen occasionally. One advantage is it can be used while everything is wet and in fact if using for grass wet is preferable (nice for early morning work when the dew is heavy and you don’t want to make a racket).
