Along my spruce treelines are these woody type plants that grow right through the spruce branches. They would eventually grow pretty tall. If I can catch them away from the spruce, repeated sprays with a 2% glyphosate concentrate mix will kill them. So will 2,4-D. I don't mind occasionally spraying a spruce branch or two but fear repeated sprayings might hurt them. I'm not even sure what these plants/potential trees are.

Anyone have an idea of a spray herbicide I could use that I could spray on the plant and because of proximity also spray the spruce?

Pic one is a mulberry. Best to just pull them up while small. The other doesn't register with me yet. For scrub that pops up under conifers I use triclopyr in the weed Wick. A little goes a long way and no collateral damage from overspray.

Thank you. I'll look into it.

Thank you. That's what I have tried to do but they grow back. Worse, I get a facefull of spruce needles plus some are not possible to reach. A spray with no collateral spruce damage would be easy to use, reach in easily and solve the problem.

Get a sprayer with a wand and mount an inverted funnel over it. That allows you to direct the spray better.

Adjust the nozzle for a a spatter of droplets vs an actual 'spray' that will drift. Might not need the funnel but it couldn't hurt to add that. If you lop low slather/glob/paint glyoho concentrate (~40%) on the stub ends within 10-15 min to kill the roots vs stimulate a 'pruning response' and regrowth.

Wow, good idea that I forgot all about that. But still, I need a stronger chemical to kill those things. They die hard.

I have cut some and touched the cut with straight 41% glyphosate but mostly the stump is buried in six feet of tangled brush.

If you are using a wand with the funnel over it you can use roundup. Just be careful not to get any on the tree. You can also use a 2L bottle and cut the bottom off. I use that to "weed" in the flower bed. Just cover the weed and spray.
