There are 3 drain plugs on the 1600. One is for hydraulic fluid and it is located just forward of the steering column on the right side bottom (24mm). The the fluid was strictly hydraulic fluid and was clean / clear. My 1600 is 4WD and there is a low point under the tractor that is kind of U shaped. The plug there is smaller, 10mm and another plug on the bottom of the rear axle [bottom of hog head], 29mm. I drained from the U shaped low point first (5 gallons) came out [Very thick almost black with red tint]. The other on the bottom of the read axle drained about 1/2 - 1 gallon. The trans had 80W90 gear oil which came out of both of the drain plugs just mentioned.

Supposedly, these manual trans were originally shipped from Ford with 80W90 gear oil in the trans.

Plug above blue plastic container is the drain plug for the hydro.

Next pic shows fill point for hydraulic fluid and if you look closely - there is a division between the hydraulic and the transmission.

I hope this helps!

Pumping cold or near freezing 80W90 id very difficult to pump with gear type pump. I am wondering id transmission reservoir was separate from Hydraulic reservoir that usually is diffy housing in this particular case.

Yes, I agree in cold climates however, in as far as the oil in the trans; there is no pump - - its all self contained section separate from the hydraulic side. Funny thing is the hydra pump is located under the tractor seat and is pumped from front to back and then returns - all via hard line.

Well, live and learn I reckon. I like to go to NH website when I have time for a look. Certainly different than my 1700. Thanks for the info and pics above. I will study them later to get a feel for what's going on.

JC,

Below, is transmission for 1700. The oil for tranny and hyd is the same and it flows from back to diffy. There is no physical barrier between diffy and transmission housing.
