Need opinon on JCB 1550 TLB

I ran acorss a early 80's JCB 1550 TLB that the owner is asking $5000. The glass and doors are long gone, runs and is currently operating.

I have not looked at it yet but plan to tomorrow.

Few questions:

1. Any idea on value?
2. How heavy is this TLB?
3. Is this a 4x4?

My thoughts have been to buy a used TLB vice a backhoe for the JD 3320 which is $6,800.

1) Depends on the operating condition mostly. Does it function properly? Pins and bushings tight? Does it leak? Burn oil? Transmission strong? Hydraulics strong with no drift? Ect. If the owner is asking $5000, I'd imagine that it needs some work.

2) The JCB website should have weights, but a rough estimate would be anywhere from 14,000 - 22,000 lbs. Open cab and 2wd, I'd guess closer to 16,000 lbs.

3) If the picture attached is the machine, then 2WD. 4WD will have a planetary gear reduction at the front hubs of these machines. Also look for R4 type front tires on 4WD.

If you are considering it, find a heavy equipment mechanic to go with you to test run it. They know what to look for and can determine the difference between normal wear and abuse. He could also give you a general idea about the cost of repair and maintenance.

One of my neighbors has a used one he bought recently and it appears to be in decent shape with all glass intact. His comment was "it will have to do for now" and said he really wanted a Cat 420 he also looked at but just didn't have enough cash on hand. I will ask him if he has needed any parts and if so how hard are they to get.
