Hello everyone,

I have a '92 J.D. 770 that I have been doing some work on this summer. I have got the tractor back together and am trying to get it to crank.
Some info:
Has a brand new battery
new wiring harness from battery to starter & from the dash wires to the battery
no lights are hooked up
seat switch is connected and looks as if everything else is
I have good ground

Whats happening when I turn the key is:
The dash lights up
The fusable link wire over heats
nothing else.
The starter isn't making a sound.
The real sad part is the tractor was running fine before I pulled the wiring harness's.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What fuse link is frying?? Where does it go? From and to??

IS it possible you have something hooked up wrong on the starter solenoid? OR battery backwards?

I just found a bad connection at the ignition switch. It's the red/white wire or the main power wire. If this was a bad connection would that cause the fusable to fry?

Fusable was only frying when I tried to turn over the motor, not when key was on.

Motor turns freely by the way (just checked)

Check the wire from the key switch to the starter, it may have a short to ground causing the fusible link to fry when trying to start.
Or you may have the key switch wired wrong, sending battery power (through fusible link) to ground.

I pulled the neutral start, fuel shut off relays and the air intake heater, still nothing. I checked the red & white wire from the key switch to the starter, it is completely covered by the plastic wire wrap. Doesn't look like any bare wire is touching metal. That wire does have some corrosion on it at the connectors, should I pull off the plastic and look for bare spots?
I cant see what could be plugged in backwards, all the connections are unique to the circuit.
Could I have fried the starter solenoid?
Don't know if this helps, but the red wire from the battery will spark if touching the tractor frame.

It could be a bad starter solenoid. Remove the wire from the key to starter solenoid then see if key to start fries fusible link.

With thanks to K7ln, the machine is now cranking away. The air intake heater is bad.
I still cant get it to fire.

Try a heat gun or hair dryer to heat air in the intake.

Thank you for your interest! One of the many things that I replaced on this tractor this summer were the fuel lines. The original ones were very dry and cracking in spots. Now that the machine is turning over, I don't believe it's getting fuel. I wont be able to get back to working on it until Saturday morning. I have to wait until then to check the relay and crack a line to see where the fuel stops.
Anyone have an idea how long it should take for the pump to push enough diesel to the cylinders for it to be able to fire?
Thanks for offering the manual, I bought a copy earlier this year.
