Mike, sounds like you are getting a lot of helpful information locally. I have seen the gabions in use, though I didn’t know the name. When I lived in Atlanta there are a few streams that are notorious for over flowing when ever we had big rains. Of course they are in the exact area that people build million plus dollar houses for some reason. Several of these streams had been lined with gabions stacked like retaining walls to prevent erosion. As I recall the wire was more like cyclone fence material. Hog wire might be strong enough but would it hold up to constant contact with water? I don’t see any reason that the wire cages could not be filled with broken up concrete if you have a good source. If your source is large enough and the concrete is broken small enough it would make a good road base also.
