I was just gifted an old log splitter. It needs a hydraulic oil change. The owners manual does not say what type or kind of hydraulic oil. Can anybody tell me what to put in this thing? Thanks1

Nothing special. It's maybe more a question of what sources you have.

Home Depot/Walmart/Advance Auto there are quite a few places and I've noticed quite a few diffrent kinds of hydraulic oil. Can you recommend which type I'm to use?

The tractor supply brand fluid that was on sale last Friday for $16 for 5 gallons would have been great...

And unless it has water or other contaminates in it I wouldn’t even bother.

How much is the pump vs the oil cost? Say it’s stupid all you want but have you ever heard of a wood splitter failure caused by bad oil.

If the oil is clean and amber color there is no reason to change it. If not, any name brand AW32 hydraulic oil should do fine. I would not break the bank on the fluid. It is just going through a tank, pump, valve, cylinder and filter. Nothing there is hard on fluid.

Would regular automotive transmission fluid work?

These are low tech systems much simpler than equipment so it probably would work, but why wouldn’t you use hydraulic oil? Which is cheaper anyway.
