John Deere Model M
Hello. I'm new to the forum, but I need a bit of advice. I need to bring home a John Deere Model M. It's a 500 mile trip. I'll be using a GMC C4500 dump truck. I need to put the tractor on the back of the truck. I'll be towing a trailer with a Lincoln Towncar, so I will not be able to trailer the tractor. How do I safely strap this thing down? This is a one way, one time trip, so thankfully this is the only time I need to do this.

About the truck: it has removable stake sides, and currently there are no mounting rings, or really anything to get a stronghold on to.

About the tractor: it is a 1950-ish John Deere model M, and it weighs about 2,600 pounds.

Thanks for any help.

Could you remove the sides and attach your chains to the stake pockets?

Or weld attachment points to each corner in a out of the way spot.

Remove the stake bed, you dont need it on anyway, then use the pockets to attach your chain. They will be plenty strong to hold the tractor. I use them on my carhauler to hold my 8600# tractor with no problem. Just run the chain in from the top and then back up on the outside to hook on to the top of the holder.

this, and chain each corner of the tractor as a minimum. you can use two long chains, one for each end of the tractor, but arrange the chains such that one end of the chain is attached to the tractor and the body of the chain loops back on itself so that each corner is restrained by a unique length of chain. this way, if you have one corner come loose or something breaks, the other corner is still firmly attached.

if you use straps, one strap at each corner minimum.

if you have a front end loader or any kind of moveable attachment (box blade, mower, etc) use at least one strap to tie the attachment to the bed of the truck.

How are you going to load / unload this rig ? I sure hope ramps are not part of this process . You need to get rid of that hitch and back up to a dock or a ditch . You do realize that that M is a tricycle front end ? Not trying to rain on the parade , but things can go wrong real quick .

Thanks so much guys. I'm young. I appreciate you sharing your experience.

Running the chains through the stake pocket seems like a great idea.

I don't trust myself enough to weld on some rings and would worry about what would happen if it broke during the trip.

Ramps? oh gosh no! I'm going to trailer the tractor to a local dock where they unload tractor trailers.

Thanks again for your help.
