Guys I had asked some questions in regards to my Ford 1600 4wd tractor in the past. Well I rewired some things and got the headlights and rear lights working. I even got the horn working.

However, the guy I got the tractor from had the alternator wired up as a 1 wire alternator. The wires from the voltage regulator harness back to the starter aren't hooked to anything. There are 3 wires there that I am unsure how they should be hooked up to either the starter or the alternator. I know I will never be able to get the charge light to go away if I don't have these wires hooked up. Again, they are the wires coming from the harness that gets hooked into the voltage regulator. The run back by the starter and alternator but aren't hooked up. Any idea where they get hooked into.

Lastly, I was going to just leave it alone once I got all of the lights working, but now when I push in the clutch, it engages the starter into the flywheel. I didn't change any wires from the ignition switch, but did add a few to get all of the lights and everything working. What should I look for. Do you think the ignition switch is going bad? It didn't do this before. The wire from the starter is hooked up into the ignition switch on the same terminal as the lights and everything else. Basically so they only get power when the key is on the on position. I don't think it would be my safety swich by the clutch.

Any help on these two issues is greatly appreciated.

The problem with the starter engaging when you press the clutch has nothing to do with the 1 wire alt. . There is a white wire that goes from the ign. switch to the clutch switch then to the starter. Un hook this wire at the ign. switch. See if you have power on the post at the switch. if you have power there without the key being in the start position your ign. switch is bad. If you don't have power at the switch see if you have power at the wire you unhooked, If you do you probably have some bare wires that are touching or you crossed some wires when you hooked up your lights.

Well I pulled it into my garage to take a look at it. Now when I turn the key over it won't do anything. All lights still work but it will not even make a click noise, let alone begin to turn over. I can cross the studs on the starter over with a screwdriver and it will turn over. Do you think it is a wiring issue or could have the starter have went out just like that. I am stumped. How can I check to see of starter is bad or if it is wiring.

If you can jump the posts at the starter and it cranks over the starter is fine. Check the clutch switch and see if you have power there.

Ok. Here is what and how I checked. I tested the battery first and was getting 12.58. I left the black lead to the negative post on the battery and the read lead to the big screw on the starter that leads to the battery positive post. I was getting around 12.5 there. I tested the small screw on the starter that is connected into the clutch switch an ignition switch. I had the black lead still on the negative post of the battery. I wasn't getting anything but when I pushed the clutch and turn the ignition on, I was getting 13.1 there. So I think it is getting juice there from the switch. But the starter won't turn over. I can still cross it with a screwdriver and get it to turn over. I am at a loss here. Any help is appreciated.

Are you getting 13.1 at the small terminal of the starter when the key is in the on position or in the start position.
