need help with compact tractor purchase

I would start with at least 30 HP diesel maybe more depending on how much acreage. Also, get the 4WD also known as MFWD on a compact. This will help pull about a 6 ft wide disc.
Look at the 790 and 4310 models or bigger depending on your budget versus your spare time.

Look at a 12x12 PowerReverser and also 4WD /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif(4510)
I have 15 acres and will be doing some of the things you have talked about, but it will depend as previously stated it depends on how many acres you plan to do this work on.

WHY, does it make you feel good to shift?
If you get a CUT that has the HP for what you are doing

If the HST tractor has cruise control I guess it would be OK, but I would hate to pull a disc over a plowed field and try to hold a HST pedal steady. I plowed and disc about 6 acres over the weekend and was glad I could put my 4310 with shuttle shift in gear and forget it.

I am NORMALLY a strong advocate of HYDRO but in this case we have someone who is looking for a recommendation on a tractor that will be planting, disking, etc. Those tasks are generally considered to be gear tractor tasks because they are agricultural tasks, not small estate/yard maintenance tasks.
We really don't have enough information about land size so tractor HP is pretty tough to recommend, I think if we had more information we could make an informed choice. Even the choice of Hydro vs Gears is tough in this case because of the lack of information. If we knew that it was 1/2 an acres that was going to be farmed versus 5 or 10 or more acres we could begin to think about HP and gears.
