1967 Case 580CK
I'm trying to repack the cylinder that operates the bucket on my 1967 Case 580CK backhoe. I already repacked the 2 stabilizer cylinders, so have some experience.
The problem is that this cylinder has 2 plastic wipers that go on each side of the gland, but they are so tight I can't seem to insert them no matter what.. :(
As you can see on the attached picture, the wiper is almost a 1/4" opened when placed on the rod, and almost a 1/4" overlapping when inserted into the gland.. the new wipers match the old wipers in diameter, so it's the right size and the seal kit came from Case directly.

They probably use a press or something at the factory assembly, but what a poor DIY farmer like me can do..
Thanks in advance for any help folks!

Rob

Did several cylinders on my 580B a few years ago, IIRC there were two options on them - depended on whether the piston was 2-piece or one. In your case though, nothing comes to mind as to why the old ones came out but new ones aren't right.

At first I thought you were talking about the soft plastic donut insert that goes inside the gland nut - those can be a bear cold, but a dip in some fairly hot water and a pair of "toothless" duckbill pliers helps. Mine went in easy by warming them up, grabbing that insert with fingers AND pliers, and twisting. Once started in the inner groove, you just "massage" the seal til it's happy all the way around.

Still don't see how new/old can be the same size and only one fits... Steve

Thanks Steve,
It turns out I was trying to install them the wrong way.. the skinny part of the wiper goes outside.. :)
I was able to install them but they are VERY tight!

Live and learn. I had the same problem when I did one two summers ago.

Yeah, they BETTER be pretty tight - you already had LOOSE, and look how well THAT worked :=)
