Hi All,

I've been reading these forums a lot lately and the advice has been great, but down to the wire and almost pulled the trigger yesterday. Bullet in the chamber.. had some last minute doubts.

I have about 10 acres in North Carolina, mostly layers right now but also adding a modest size garden on top of the small one we have going now. Will probably be getting a few goats and such soon as well. I have about 4 acres of fenced in grass, a pond and creek and another 3 acres of non fenced in grass that I will be fencing in and another 3 acres of woods that I plan to clear out enough to enjoy a stroll (ie make some trails) without being cut to shreds by these wonderful thorn vines that seem to grow through a good portion of it.

On top of that, the barn is old and we've got a drive of a probably 500 ft up to it i'm installing with abc i'll need to maintain, as well as a parking area of abc large enough for about 6 vehicles.

I also have some retaining walls to build, a french drain to move, and a barn that I will probably be knocking down and rebuilding at some point. (though it will be sad to do so but its just not as functional as it needs to be or large enough and its clearly the best place to have the barn, nowhere else makes sense.

On top of that I need to build a lean-to (to store the tractor implements and tractor first so i have somewhere to store my new toy,, err.. i mean equipment.

I also need to do some grading on this hill that's a bit too steep to be safe and maintain the fence, mow the 6-7 acres of grass and possibly use it to build another building on another part of the property later.

Oh, and I almost forgot. I'm trying to buy another 5 acres on the back side of our property that's all woods right now, it will need to be thinned out if I do. But not sure if/when that will happen but I'm keeping my fingers crossed because I really want that buffer, its the closest property line to the house and our barn is almost right on top of the line.

I should probably mention our soil is basically a mix of quartz and clay. Like we literally have boulders of quartz on the property as big as 10 by 10. (no, I don't plan to move those!)

Oh, and we also have a couple dead trees I need to take care of.. big ones.

So, with all that I plan to buy a tractor with a backhoe, a box blade or leveler (dealer recommends the leveler, says it will work better), post hole digger with a 9 and 12 inch bit, a grappler (torn between what type to get) and a rotary cutter. Also probably buy or rent a tiller for the garden we want to install.

I plan to use the grappler to both help clear woods as well as move building materials for my various projects, not to mention using it to clean up the old barn once I demo it.
Hoe I'll be using for digging listed above and also put a thumb on it to help hold things like 8x8 posts to help with building projects since I'll be building a lot of this stuff on my own.

So, we started out looking at subcompacts and quickly realized it wasn't going to handle everything. Started looking at 25hp compacts and think they could maybe handle things but the hydraulics and stuff on them had me concerned with the backhoe work and grappler especially. Was pretty convinced the 35 hp Kioti could do the job with its 30 hp pto and 11.7 gpm hydraulics but just before buying starting considering the advice I hear so much here being, buy a size larger than you think you need.

So, thats why I'm here. Considering the above. Would you say the CK3510se would handle everything I need it to and is going bigger probably overkill? Or, would going with a DK42 or 47, maybe an nx even, or the LS4140 be a safer bet?

I'm trying not to spend more then I need to, but I'd rather spend a little more than find out later I needed more tractor then I got.

Also, any other suggestions or advice I'm happy to hear. Thank you!

(edit to add:) I should add both the Kioti dealer and LS dealer I have near me are great. The Kioti used to sell LS also but says they stopped because he had too many issues with their wiring harnesses needing to be repaired and he won't sell a tractor that has a known flaw, so until they fix it he won't sell them... (seen a few posts of people having issues with them but doesn't sound like a major issue?) And of course the LS dealer says he's never heard of any wiring harness issue, lol.

My NC Kioti dealer said he didn't buy / sell a lot of the CK3510SE's - but a lot of the CK4010's and non-SE, mostly because he said you can add almost all the options back to the "base" model - and he didn't see the value of getting "everything" (I am actually glad there's no horn on our tractor because I am pretty sure my spouse would simply honk at me all the time)

15 acres here - sounds similar use - like having the xtra power of the 4010 (however, experience limited - brought it home last weekend!)

S Morris - welcome to TBN and the forum. First a suggestion - update your profile - let us know where you are located. Tomorrow when you post in a different thread - nobody will know you are in N Carolina.

Now - you use some terms I'm not familiar with - - "mostly layers" "ABC" "leveler".

You will, sooner or later, realize there is no such thing as the perfect sized tractor. I have 80 acres and a mile long gravel driveway. Started out with a brand new 26 hp Ford 1710 4WD and kept it for 27 years. In 2009 I bought a new Kubota M6040. After 27 years all the smaller tractor projects were completed. Starting in 2009 - I moved into the larger tractor projects.

I would suggest a tractor of around 40 to 45 engine hp. Will you have snow to plow. I would prefer Kioti over LS - just my humble opinion - JMHO. You are getting yourself into a lot more work than you will ever realize and you will be glad to have the added size, weight and power.

Start out by making a list of all the project anticipated for the next five years. Then rank them in the order you need to have them completed. Now you can look at tractors and ask - "is this unit capable of completing this task in the amount of time I will have available". Buy one or two implements first and complete the project they are designed for. You will find as you gain experience and skill - - your initial desire for certain implement is likely to change.

By the way - welcome to TBN and the forum - where we all love to spend YOUR money. Ha, ha, ha

You have a full plate.
I'll share my lessons learned.
I would recommend the DK over the CK.
HP not the issue but the weight to put work to the ground.
You have a lot of various, work and what is probably more important then horse power is the ability to put the torque to the ground.
The DK now has HST so that is a big plus and over 1k lbs heavier. (IIRC)
Had I not bought the CK4010HST first, never would have the appreciation for the NX putting the work to the wheels.
What was happening is that the CK was flogged like a rented mule and it is a work horse. Not putting it down at all.
But for the root plowing I was doing I was using max power to no end for hours.

The NX handles the same work with aplomb. It may grunt on occasion but no where like the poor CK was getting abused....lol.
Okidoki...that's it..all I can tells yah enjoy your purchase and the giddy grin per hour as you get familiar with the machine.
Guess we are just big boys playing with big toys.

Thanks for the advice so far! It's actually been pretty helpful. As far as the ck4010, I figure if I'm going to spend that much I may as well take the next little step up to a dk4210 and get the larger frame, axle, tires, etc.

I need to price the nx vs the dk. Also know some people say get biggest engine in the frame possible but not sure that advice fits what Im doing although the next step up in the dk, 47 is appealing but will have to see where price is exactly.

I'm guessing the dk42 would be plenty already and having a backhoe for a ballast is pretty helpful.

The nice thing about your choice - Kioti - you very seldom hear anybody say anything bad about the brand. So - no matter which way you go - you will be getting a great unit that with normal care and maintenance will be nice to give your great grand son or daughter. I'm lucky - - my two great grand daughters like my BMW motorcycle more than my Kubota.

So the Nx was only about a thousand more than the dk with the options I wanted so my Nx45 will be coming Thursday or Friday.. Only ended up spending 15k more than I thought I'd spend when I first decided to get a tractor. Lol

Yes - when dealing with the toys of big boys one can easily exceed expected budgetary restraints. However - it is money well invested. You will be amazed at what the larger unit is capable of and should the day ever come where you sell it - your decision today will bring handsome returns.

My initial tractor - brand new 1982 Ford 1710 - brought $2000 more than I paid for it - when 27 years later - in 2009, I traded it in for my current Kubota M6040.

I must admit - that is the only expenditure - in all my life - that over a quarter century - increased in value.

A wise decision SMorris - congratulations on your new tractor and now your work can truly begin.
