1953 John Deere 40u
Acquired this tractor has no serial number data tag. Need to know year model and serial number range. Have engine serial number -720 76,if that helps. Want to order parts to restore. Pictures attached. Thanks, any help would be appreciated.

I think according to SN it's a model 40 Tricycle built in 1953

It could possibly be an M if JD built that many in the last yr but I think the SN's didn't overlap.

I concur with TxJim - a Model 40 - we had the next model up the JD 420 on the farm. The model 50 had a flywheel on the left side.

I agree it's a 40, but also it definitely is not a tricycle. The serial number suggests that it is, so I would guess it either Is a 40U that had an engine swap, or a 40t that had a front end swap. Either way, it looks like it is in pretty good shape. Should make a nice one to restore!

40 Tricycle had the factory option of a wide frt axle. Here's proof straight from the parts catalog.

The engine serial number didn't necessarily match the tractor serial number on the Dubuque built tractors, but they were recorded in the serial number register. You can contact the Two Cylinder club at Twocylinder.com and have them research your tractor. It costs, but may be the only way to tell what your tractor serial number was. Then you can apply to Deere for a replacement SN plate. It won't look like the original, but would be official.

On the other hand, if the motor has been changed, the only way to get the serial number range is to get a parts catalog and start narrowing it down based on production changes.

It ZOOMED right over my head(poor reading comprehension) that the number listed wasn't the machine SN. Plus I should have realized it had too small of rear tires for it to be a 40T but I was homed in on the serial number.

Thank you everyone for the info on tractor ID. This narrows it down to a 1953 to 1955 John Deere 40U. I Think...
