I have a 4 foot shredder that has a leaky gearbox seal. I know the gearbox is a Warner, but I can’t tell the model number. The shredder doesn’t have any markings on it to help me either.

Can anyone identify the shredder brand? I’ve attached pictures of the shredder and the gearbox itself.

I had a similar situation. Leaking gear box on a OLD rototiller. Company was long out of business.

I had to make my own gearbox gasket. A sheet of gasket material - sharp knife - blunt nose piece of plastic rod.

Hold the sheet of gasket material in place with wood working clamps. Mark the bolt holes - go around the inside of the gear box with the plastic rod to outline the inside hole. Lay marked gasket sheet on hard wood surface and cut out the bolt holes and the large inside hole. Trim excess gasket material - leaving, at least, an inch of gasket material on the outside of the large hole. You can trim it up once everything is back together.

Sure took longer than installing a pre-made gasket but, by golly, it worked very well.

You have a drive shaft coming out thru the gear box cover. You will have to cut a hole out of the center of the gasket material. This will allow the shaft to protrude thru the gasket material. The gasket material can lie flat against the outer edge of the gear box. This will allow you to make an accurate mark on the gasket - all the way around the inside of the gear box.

You can also drain the gearbox and refill it with Cornhead Grease. That will really slow down or eliminate the leak and is easier than making a new gasket.

5030 is absolutely correct. It's certainly worth a try. When I made the gasket for the rototiller - never heard of Cornhead Grease. Heck - it was so very long ago - Cornhead Grease may not have existed.

Another for cornhead grease. Save yourself the aggravation of trying to replace seals.

Cornhead grease liquifies as it churns inside a gearbox. I know of lots of farmers and wannabe farmers that use it on worn out gearboxes in lieu of making new gaskets and silencing worn bearings, You can get it at any well stocked farm store, Don't know if TSC has it but I bet you can get it on Amascon.

Why don't you describe for us what a "wannabe farmer" is.
