Need general Opinions on shop roof

This is mostly an asthetics question, would like your opinion.

Basics: It's a 30x40, 12' inside to trusses ( tall for my tractor), shop all metal. It is placed where the boss (wife) gave me permission, slightly just off hill top, approx. 3 % grade.

I am at the truss building stage and it was suggested to me by a friend that I construct the roof in a lean-to fashion, (I was going with the standard style construction) to push the water to the down hill side. I would have to place a french drain the way I was going to do it.

I like the standard pitched roof but I understand his logic in this particular situation. There will be a new house within 150' someday so that is my concern, Asthetics.

any thoughts?

For very small buildings, the lean to type roof would suit me, but not for the size building you're talking about. I'd go with the standard type 4/12 pitch roof.

Keep in mind, though, that there are those who think I have no taste at where aesthetics are concerned (and they're probably right).

I think Bird has perfect taste. Most would agree that a minimum 4/12 gabled (standard-style) construction is more tasteful than a shed (lean-to) roof. Think resale (not that you ever will).

I recommend that you consider a gable-end roof design that includes a
ridge beam and simple rafters rather than trusses, as the beam will give
you the ability to mount a hoist system. Since you are already going for
a 12' inside height, fit at least a 9' rollup door, too. Large roof
overhangs are good, too.

Since you are on a 3% slope, you may have to dig out the grade at the
back of the bldg to get the entry to be at grade. This may require a short
retaining wall at the back.

Is it possible to turn the roof so that the water is channeled to the sides of the building instead of the front and back, and as was suggested, dig out the grade at the rear so that the water also flows around the building, rather than to it? Do you have enough room for that?

The shop runs length wise, parallel with the hill with the back end set off propery line 3'. The eventual "home" will look towards the other end from the parking area, so you would see the lean to effect.

I have 10x10 roll up and 1 personell doors. I already have the outside wall frame done.

Thanks guy's, I too think the standard looks better, fact,, I have only ever built lean-to type for like 2-3 sided stalls. I suppose I could also install a gutter on the upper side and 4" PVC it to below grade.
