Need French Drain Advice

Recently we regraded behind the pole barn to gently slope the ground where there used to be a drop-off. The rain-water wants to pool in this area so we need to install a French Drain to route the water away from the barn.

In doing a bit of research on French Drains we came up with this reference only there was no mention of geo-cloth to keep the soil out of the stone (is it necessary)? How about some recommendations from those of you that have constructed drains that actually work.

My understanding is that if you bring the drain rock up to the surface, you do not need a cloth wrap or sock to keep the sediment from clogging the perorated pipe and the water canals that feed it. I did not so I used a sock. Not a bad idea to have some drains come to the surface either. Great way to drain water quickly as well as flush the pipe out if ever needed.

How far and how deep do you need to dig the trench to carry the water away with the drain?
The reason I ask is the main advantage to a french drain is cosmetics. The land still looks nice, or smooth after its in.
They are fairly involved, expensive and time consumeing to put in,and there is a finite timetable on how long it will last.
From your picture, you already have a nice wide trench that is collecting water, why not extend the trench and keep it all open?
Or put in a drain pipe?
You can get a roll of 6 inch black corugated pipe 100 feet long for under $50 from Lowes for an aweful lot cheaper than any other type of drain.
A picture of the back and what's holding the water back would be very helpful.

Eddie how about these options, which do you think might best work?
No. 1 Use your idea and direct the water to the wooded area.
No. 2 Direct the water to the existing downspout drains.
No. 3 Use your idea and direct the water beside the parking area.
