( Isn't this what we should expect. All retailers have to buy at wholesale, so they can mark it up some and sell at retail and make a profit. If they gave us retail for our trade, and had to recondition the trade and sell it at the same price it wouldn't take many deals to put them out of business)
Spoken like a true salesman.... /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
If they take in a trade and don't have to recondition the tractor then it's a profit on the sale and a large profit on the used sale. That's two profit opportunities in my book.
I have no intention of denying the dealer a fair profit. I just don't see why we "put up" with this by trading in our perfectly maintained equipment for sometimes thousands of dollars less than it's worth. If we advertise and go to a little trouble ourselves, it can be very rewarding in the pocketbook.
So I'm not blaming the dealer for wanting and deserving to make a profit. I just think I don't owe it to any dealer to give him two opportunities for profit (three if it's a trade-in to the same dealer I bought it from). I can at least try to take one of those profit opportunities and put it to work for me. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Recent example: I have a very good friend who had a 1995 Ford Ranger pickup that was garage kept and only had 35K miles. The truck was tight and spotless. He got the "hots" for a new vehicle and bought a Ford Escape. Well, he never even posted his truck for sale on the company bulletin board. He took it in and they offered him less than $1500 because they said it would sell very low to a wholesaler. When he took his Escape back to the dealer a week later, they had his pickup on the lot for $5395. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif They probably won't get quite that much for it, by I'm sure he could have doubled the $1500 he got for it. He was in a hurry for that new car and just didn't take the time to save some money. I can't hold that dealer at fault though, not one bit. He made an offer and my friend accepted. That's a deal, nothing wrong with that. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
