Our AC guy just left. He called the factory on our heater and found out it's a 4 ton system and we will be going with a Goodman 410A, with new outside unit and a new A-coil plus new lines for just under $4,000.00. Comes with a 10 year warranty and tax credit.

Thanks everyone for your help.

I think you'll be happy with that, Randy; good choice.

It must be a heat pump system, not a central A/C system, as no Goodman A/C system with just an indoor coil matched with an outdoor unit will meet the federal tax credit.

The ECM (variable speed) motor air handler along with either the SSZ14 or GSX14 outdoor unit will qualify you for a $450 federal tax credit. The EEM (X-13) air handler with either of the same mentioned outdoor unit will get you a $300 federal tax credit, less any local power company rebates (our local power company offers a $200 rebate if you hit 14 SEER along with a ECM/variable speed blower motor). The SSZ14 unit comes with a lifetime compressor/10 year parts and the GSZ14 unit comes with a 10 year parts/compressor warranty. If your contractor doesn't know it, you don't need to use a TXV with the system to qualify (one less part to go wrong IMO). Ensure that the system is REGISTERED to get your warranty, if you don't (or your contractor doesn't), it will only be a 5 year warranty.

He didn't mention an air handler. He may just be getting condenser & Evap coil with new line set

I was basing my assumption (yes, I know about that word:D) on the comment by the OP "comes with a 10 year warranty and tax credit". Only tax credit I'm familiar with is the federal tax credit (as previously mentioned a lot of local utility companies offer added rebates as well). For A/C systems, tax credit means 16 SEER, but people forget about the EER that must be met as well (and for heat pump, you need to figure the HSPF as well).

You can't meet the tax credit criteria on A/C systems with Goodman with just a coil and outdoor unit (as well as most other manufacturers I'm aware of). You also can't hit the tax credit with a heat pump with Goodman on a heat pump system with just a outdoor unit and coil (on hP best you'll do is 14 SEER and on straight A/C best you'll do is around 15.5 SEER but neither hits the criteria).

Cheapest way for a tax credit with Goodman is a ASPF air handler with a SSZ or GSZ14 outdoor unit, although honestly I'm not familiar with the GSZ14 unit because for the price difference, IMO you're better off getting a lifetime compressor with the SSZ14 unit.

Then again, personally, if it were my home, I'd probably stay away from Goodman, but my reasoning has nothing to do with quality, but the way they (Goodman) handled their coil issues. Then again, they had so many go bad that if they decided to give labor for each one, they'd go bankrupt and they're betting people will forget:p That said, I realize it's hard not to find ANY manufacturer that hasn't had a major cluster somewhere at sometime.

I own a Lennox signature model. I live in Houston where AC is alway on and this is a real top unit. The main thing is the quality parts and low energy usage, and its quit. You can't hear it come on and you can hold a conversation while standing next to it, it's a two stage sysem, you control the humidity in the house. They now come with direct hookup of solar PV panels right into the unit. Look them up on web you will not regret the money for a Lennox.

That's the reason I posted that he didn't mention about an air handler, HP, etc, etc,. cause you only get tax credits ( as you mentioned) if the system meets certain conditions. My main line is Trane ( Joe,,,you know IT'S HARD TO STOP A TRANE :D:laughing:) I do install Goodman from time to time & I haven't had real problems.Maybe someone else got all the bad coils:laughing: The Goodman evap coils are now all aluminium

The Goodman evap coils are now all aluminium

Why do you think they went with aluminum?:D I know a couple guys who have at least 150 bad coils between them for two years worth of instal on Goodman.

Ken, Ken, Ken...don't you realize yet that American Standard is the upscale line of Trane:laughing:

In all seriousness, to some extent, same crap just a different color box from each manufacturer. A crappy install though makes anyone's equipment look bad though.

At our city house, the original 20+ year old heat pump died a few months after I bought the house. Not a surprise because I new the system was old but I had hoped the system would last until the fall. Instead if failed in the heat of the summer.

Replaced it with a Rheem which was running just fine a when we sold the house 10ish years later.

The new house got a Goodman which is now six years old. This summer the capacitor went out during a stretch of 100+ degree temperatures. Cannot really complain since the outside unit sits in the afternoon sun.

Later,
Dan
