Need a new battery for the 5420

The stock battery lasted from 2002 until 2011. An Exide battery from TSC was quite a bit less (I don't remember exactly) maybe $179?? But it is toast and has lasted 7 years.

The stock battery BLEW THE F UP back in 2011 when I was attempting to start the tractor. Literally, it blew the top off. A short caused a spark and it sounded louder than a 12 guage shotgun. I had to immediately spray everything down to dilute the acid.

I'm kind of hoping I can snag a AGM from a leftover project at work. They are just sitting in a room now for about a year going to waste.... I will talk to the powers that be.

Ok update. Tractor supply's battery is a group 31 Exide model that sells for about $105.

Group 31 Odyssey AGM is around $400. I wouldn't give spit for an Optima AGM. Too many bad reviews.

I've had 2 Optimas in the 4310 and each has lasted 6 years or more.

YMMV but I've had terrible luck with deere batteries, at least 10+ years ago. The hibernators we bought for our 4010 were expensive but they fit the stock battery boxes. They lasted MAYBE a year.

My advice is to find the biggest deep cycle that will fit. I've been slowly converting all my diesels over to deep cycle batteries. Yes, I know the CCA numbers SAY they won't work as well as a normal SLA but my experience has been VERY much the opposite. I've had amazing luck with every diesel I've done this on. Able to crank much faster and longer after a glow cycle than an SLA.

Since the last battery (Exide) lasted almost 7 years, I bought another at TSC. $105.

I had to wire brush the plate under the battery and clean off the corrosion. I sprayed it with rustoleum rusty metal primer.

Put the battery in, and she fired right up.

I've always wondered if a deep cycle would work. Thanks for posting the info. If it works in the cold of Michigan, I'm sure it would work here too.

When I needed one for my JD5520, I went to Sam's Club and bought the biggest CCA one that would fit. I don't remember the exact price but they were the lowest, by far and had a no-hassle replacement policy if it failed. That was 7 or so years ago and still going strong. Note here is that I charge the batts ever fall just before winter. They seem to last way longer that way.

On Optima AGM, I've had great results with them in farm tractors. Again, I always keep the charge up and I think that's super important for Optimas. Never, ever let them fully discharge.
