Mowing Need a mower and some persuasion.

For the price of a mmm, you can pick up a very nice used riding mower with a 48" deck. You'll be half done mowing by the time most people would have the parts swapped out.

I recently took my 60 mmm off for the first time. It was a snap to remove once i raised the tractor with the FEL. Now putting it back on.... lets say I need a little practice at figuring out how the height adj knob and the lift hydrolics work together.

I also just left it on for some simple mulch moving and it worked fine.

I would mention that in the 4 quotes I got for my BX in June, the MMM was listed at between $1,500+ and $1,600 on each. Of course this was included with the tractor so they may be discounted some like that.

Personally, I only want to store 1 machine rather than 2. When the MMM is not in use, I can simply stand it up by the wall with a safety latch and it takes very little space.

I've been using the BX24 for about 2 months now. I can remove the FEL and BH and put on the 54" MMM in less than 15 minutes and I can also remove the MMM and put the FEL and BH back on in about the same.

Still, if I had space to store both and had only 1.5 acres or less to mow, I'd consider separate machines just for convenience.

The MMM on the BX cuts great and swapping it isn't too bad as long as you buy yourself some frame clearance. Since I take off the FEL and BH to mow to lighten the impact on the soil, I just use some 2X6's under the wheels to gain enough height to roll the deck in or out easily.

1*I would keep an eye out on Ebay and this site for a good used deck for far less than the cost of a new.
2*as to the hassle in swapping attachments, it is not that bad after you do it a few times KennyV.
1*I have a used one .
$800 beats 1551 for a new one.
2*Or leave it on like i do.

Just to add a thought or two, you might want to give a rear mounted mower some thought. It appears that you already pop your BH on and off to use your box blade. Attaching a mower to your three point hitch is pretty quick. Having seen Messick's BH removal video and adding time for the mower you should be able to do both in 4 or 5 minutes without having to roll around on the ground. Just a thought for your consideration.

Unfortunately I think most of us still need a smaller mower for trimming. We just use a self propelled walk behind for the close in stuff and we use a gas trimmer as well. Perhaps when all the landscaping is finished the trimming will be less. Best of luck with your decision.

I'm sure your local dealer gets used BX mowing deck now and then. Around here they can be had for about $600-1200 depending on the condition and size. I remove the mower from my tractor all the time and it takes about 5 minutes either way. You will get good at it. I try to keep a mental list of chores to be done with FEL but without mower. When it gets long enough I do the mower-removing deed and just go play. I tend to like not to have to maintain an extra engine. My oldie push mower while useful, it does get neglected. I admit.

Don't know about the persuasion part but how's about another opinion :D

I Have a BX23 w/60" MMM and a Wheel Horse 856 w/a 36" mower and the BX23 gets 98% of the mowing duties. It's not because the 856 doesn't give a good cut which it does, it's due more to the great mowing experience provided by the BX23.

I'm one of those that purchased the BX23 BECAUSE of it's versatility and don't mind reconfiguring it for the task at hand. Kubota made it very easy to swap implements around, so easy in fact that no tools are required, except to lockdown the locknuts on the 3ph links. There are days when I can go from my finish mowing config to FEL config to TLB config and not skip a beat.

I also have yet another Wheel Horse 876 but since it's dedicated to running a sicklebar mower to mow where neither the BX23 nor 856 will reach (a steep bank and close cut around a pond) it does get worked weekly.

The 856 does get to pull a trailer around but gets very little work as a mower.

In summation,
IF you don't mind reconfiguring your BX then go for the MMM. You'll not be disappointed. You'll find that it's one of the best tractor mowers on the market today.

IF you do mind having to swap implements, do like others and get another machine dedicated for mowing. ZTR's are better finish mowers and would be my choice IF I wanted another machine dedicated to just finish mowing.

It basically boils down to your personal preference, :D

Good luck

1* The MMM is about $2000 as I understand it.
2* you can buy a brand new riding lawn mower and not have to worry about taking the MMM off the tractor to do other jobs.
3*Get the riding mower and have two engines to maintain, but not have to worry about the configuration of the tractor;
4* just jump on and mow.
Thanks.
2*I just leave the mowers on my BX23 and BX1500.
4* that's what i do with the Bx1500 and the BX23

I wrestled with the same decision for about 9 seconds when I got my BX. I have a John Deere LX176 lawn tractor, and that's what I use to cut my grass. It's a little slower and I miss the power steering, but I'd rather have the $2000 in my pocket, personally. I change the oil at the end of the season, and that's pretty much all the maintenance I've ever done. When something on it breaks, I'll hit Ebay and get another cheap lawn tractor. I picked one up for my brother last year for $300. It was a little Cub Cadet lawn tractor, and it's served his purpose of cutting about an acre of grass for the past year.

My personal opinion is that it just doesn't make sense to spend $2000 for a mower. I know it'd save me time after I got quick at taking it on and off, and it'd make for a more pleasurable mowing experience, but it's not for me. In fact, I can't really figure out why anyone would be one of those $3000 lawn and garden tractors these days. I have to cut my grass about 5 months/year. I'd probably sooner pay someone $50/week to cut my grass if my only other option was that or buying a new tractor. I'd then recapture that time in my life, and it'd take over four years before it was no longer a cost-effective solution.

It's like getting a car. I want a car that can take me to work to earn money for the things that I enjoy doing. Driving to work is not something I enjoy. Neither is cutting the grass. I allocate my money toward things that bring me pleasure. :)
