Necessity of an oil change

Last fall I changed out my engine oil in my Tractor with Mobile 1. New Filter, blah blah blah. But due to work, I have really not used the tractor at all (maybe 8 hours at the most). I am wondering what the necessity of changing the oil really is.

Tractor is stored, our area is not particularly humid.

So, I really wanted to get some insight on why oil should be changed wether used or not every year. I think my Napa has oil that has been on the shelf for over a year...

The problem with oil in a engine vs oil on the shelf, is that oil within the engine becomes acidic due to products of combustion. Water can also condense in an engine with temp changes. That would be my concern. Id probably change it, its going on a year old.

my only question: is your engine a diesel & is Mobil 1 rated as such? otherwise, being synthetic, I'd leave it. lots of cold starts can create condensation & acids....just work it good & go from there (imho) would be my take gbood luck! b

Exactly why synthetic oil is a waste of money in a low hour use engine (IMHO). The oil needs to be changed based on the time it has been in the crankcase. Using a high-dollar product doesn't change that.

Change the oil, for piece of mind, if nothing else. Mine gets changed annually. The zero turn sees 40 hours of use a year and the big tractor is about 60. Lot's of oil life left in my rotella syn, but after a year, it's due for a change.

Like the others said, change it. Its not the 8 hours, its the junk in with the oil now that is acidic.

Why risk a 20K rig over a $5 filter?

I agree with Chris on the filter..
Although my filter was more than $5.. Still a $15 filter is better than a $18-20K tractor replacement!!!
