The no starting was caused by the flywheel key being sheared. Apparently, you've got to hold the flywheel in position with a strap wrench or other means while you torque the flywheel bolt to something like 100 ft lbs with a torque wrench. Otherwise, the engine will just shear the flywheel key. I didn't have a strap wrench so I improvised with a piece of metal held between two bolts on either side of the flywheel. Got it running, but it's still coughing up smoke so often.
I put the old breather reed back in--looks like I'm going to have to take it apart and put the new breather reed in and see if that stops the smoking.
