I missed 2 of Ivan's

I missed the SU-15 Flagon, and the Mig 31 Foxhound. Just not familiar enough with some of Ivan's more obscure aircraft.

Thanks for sharing, James. I missed three... dang it! Some got a little lucky by process of elimination. Thought I was going to only miss one until I stumbled and missed two late in the game as I got impatient.

I didn't take the quiz but I was immediately transported back in time to my initial Navy Fire Control trade course (circa '75) on the GUNAR Fire Control System and a USN training film...

"TARGET AIRCRAFT... JET TYPE!!!"

35 of 39.... They forgot to mention the Thud ( F105 ). I was a crew chief on the F4D in Thailand during Vietnam. Thanks for sharing the quiz !!

I'm only in my 50's, but I also didn't see the F104 Starfighter. Remember my father complaining about that plane. Growing up as a kid on a SAC base was the coolest when you could watch the airfield and were in cub scouts.

Me too. (one-click posted to fb, which beats me logging in deliberately)

Thought I'd see my favorite 'Fishbed' MiG 21, the only dual-delta-wing I know of, and perhaps the one fighter more globally marketed in the 20th Century than Lockheed's F104 Starfighter. (which is second in pilot crashes only to F100) MiG 21 would be THE private one-seater to own. Parts on every continent, performance considerable, and should provide unequaled bang for the buck.

"Thud" F105 Thunderchief was the original single-seat, single engine nuclear standoff weapon, once shown centerfold in Life(?) magazine as "world's deadliest one-man weapon" with rockets, bombs, etc spread wingtip to wingtip on IIRC a carrier deck. Similar body size to three man, four-engined B58 Hustler whose ordnance was ALL carried in a modular 'pod' slung under the belly. If you're ever in Nebraska the SAC Museum on I-80 between Omaha and Lincoln is a must-see for us warbird wanks.

That said, if the test hadn't been multiple choice I'd have missed a few of the Russian and Chinese planes. The Americans were all easy ones, no Pogo tho', lol. Oh well, I'm so over planes and more into trains as I get older. Got tinplate?

Mig 31, Russian answer to the B70, which never made it to production.

Yes...the Starfighter was a cool jet ! Somewhat ahead of its time. Those leading edges were very sharp...needed gloves to run your hand on them.

Wasn't that airplane tagged with the first "lawn dart" name? Ejection was on the bottom of the aircraft due to the tail, IIRC, on early models.

The F-104 Starfighter was a very small wing.... pilot killer!
