What is odd to me is that the serrations are on what would be the "Bottom" of it when the hook is engaged.

Now I can see how it would clip onto a paint can lip. Not sure if you would hold that as a handle, would suck with a full can of paint. stick into the side of the ladder rung on an aluminum ladder?
