My neighbor has had an old chicken house torn down that was right on our property line and it was about 200ft. long and he has now warned me there may be nails there so to be careful when I bush hog. Now he says he has tried to go over my pasture that adjoins his to be sure there are no nails but the Bermuda grass in about a foot or more tall in that area now and I don't know how his magnet could have gotten down to find any nails that I feel sure flew over there as they ripped the tin off the roof and sides..I need to bush hog bad...any suggestions ? I was thinking if I had a way of magnetizing the front edge of my FEL I could slowly go over the area with the FEL down just above the ground ?? I am at a loss here - any ideas..? Thanks

If the nails are just laying flat on the ground I doubt they will deal you any problems. If you want some insurance put some quality tire sealant in them. I recently demo'ed a small house for a friend and flats where a big concern. After a bit of research I settled for a military grade tire sealant that Gempler's sells. I have a couple of nails in my tires but they are holding up fine so far..

Good luck what ever route that you choose.

Um, how can you be careful? It's not like you can see nails in tall grass and brush.

Since he already admitted to the source of the nails, what about asking him to pay for any flats you get? I'm sure you want to be a good neighbor and get along with him but it only seems fair.

Depending on powerful his magnet was, it may not have had a problem at all sucking the nails through the Bermuda. I have a magnet that's of carrying size that's powerful enough to break my finger if I'm not careful when putting the keeper back on it.

Could you ask him to run over the area for a couple of hours with his truck? just so that he is sure it's safe for you?:D

Can you borrow, rent or have a buddy with a metal detector? You may find treasures of lost generations!! A one of a kind coin worth millions.... You gotta dream!!

Any chance you could burn off the grass in one area? You could disc a 20' berm and wait till the wind in blowing right.

Thank you all for the advice, I am not sure I won't pick up a nail but I looked today and my neighbor has bush hogged about 40 feet out into my pasture from the property line where he tore down the chicken house....so at least he went first..he has always been a good neighbor and I did not want to say anything to him, but see on his own he went first so all is well. Now watch I will go bush hog and sure enough I will get a nail...LOL - Hope not ! Thanks again all.:)

If you're really using the land as pasture I'd be more worried about livestock swallowing nails than running them over with a tractor. Google "cow magnet" for details.

yeah, punish him for his honesty, that'd be great. What a neighbor you must be. did he BUILD it there? property lines are sometimes hard to nail down...

but come on, the old guy said he went over it with a magnet, what else can he do?

But yeah, I somehow feel sorry for your neighbors shane.
