Hi,

After running for 10-15 minutes, coolant starts to spray/leak from the hose connections, but the temp gauge is only creeping up. After shutting'er down, the guage goes to about half way and coolant dribbles in a small stream from the uppper hose clamp. The thermostat housing is not scorching, but too hot to keep a hand on. I tried removing the thermostat, no change.

Am I right in thinking she's overheating, in spite of the gauge? How to tell if the water pump is shot? Is there a good place to take a reading with a thermometer?

Thanks.

1, if you are getting leaking at a hose clamp.. I'd take em off and check the nips.. may be rusty.. or hoses rotten.

is your lower hose warm?

have you cleaned out the block and radiator?

do this.

drain rad into a 5g bucket.

use a garden hose in top port with cap on... aim lower hose into bucket. it should floaw a full stream of a 1/2" garden hose without overflowing.. if not.. rad may be plugged.

also.. check out core.. can you see thru it. dirty core won't drop heat good. chaff and seeds and grime and dust blocks core.

next.. if you want to test pump. reconnect lower hose, fill rad, remove thermo.. aim top hose out leave rad cap off and have garden hose trickling in it to keep it filled.. start tractor.. see what water moves out top hose.. if not much.. impellor may ne rusted to a nub. not common but DOES happen.

take this time to remove block drain as well and maybee a core plug and backflush block. if a ton of rust comes out. buy 2g of ninegar , drain water.. replug and hose up everything.. add vinegar and no tstat and run and let set.. then drian next day.. back flush again.

if thermo is good re-use. can check in a pot of boiling water.. don't let wife see this....

Thanks for the excellent suggestions! I'll try them out this weekend (the tractor lives an hour from the house) and post the results.
