Saw a wet spot on the cleanout plug on my kitchen sink P-trap as I was cleaning up the kitchen, preparing to cook supper. Hmmm, a leak here? Got a paper towel to wipe it off to check more closely, and the whole plug and bottom of the P-trap disintegrated and came off in my hand!

What a mess. Needless to say, supper didn't get cooked....

Makes me wonder what's next in my 26-year-old house; it's almost like they put 25-year timers on stuff! (Water heater, roof, heat pump, washer & dryer, HRV fan motors, several double-pane casement windows, exterior trim boards, etc. etc.... It's been an expensive couple of years lately!)

Those do deteriorate rather quickly. If the previous owner used a lot of drain cleaner it only hastens the process.

Trade you your Sunday night surprise for my Sat. night one!

Have a pesky teenage girl hanging around lately, got in late with a load of crab gear so went in and had dinner before unloading the boat. Came back out and it was full dark and of course havent gotten around to putting lights in the gear shed. I felt my way in the dark to the tractor, with the click of the switch to glow plug, I hear a snort, turn on the headlights and sure enuff that teenager is sniffing around some bags of salt! the light of course freaks her and she starts running for the only way out which is right past me which even though I knew she just wanted out it is a bit disconcerting when 300 lbs of teenager goes streaking by on all fours:laughing:

There wasnt a wet spot but there could have been if I hadnt gotten rid of that beer after dinner.

YIKES! Wet would have been the least of my problems!

I LOVE your stories Rick.

Aw, come on now irving, show us the temporary duct tape repair. After all it was Sunday evening and that's when stuff like that happens.

The metal ones all rust out, or corode away, or whatever happens to them from what goes down the sink and floats around in the trap. Plastic is the only way to go!!!!

Nice that you got it before you had total failure and a big mess to deal with.

Get yourself an attack pig like Eddie Walker. Eddie never has a problem with moose, bear, walrus, or Yeti, not with ole Oscar around. Plus the pig is a babe magnet, what more could a man ask (well maybe have him fetch a beer). Glad you are okay after the the visit from the teen.

I seriously thought about that! But, since the local Home Despot was still open, I drove the 14 miles (second time that day.... glad I drive a TDI!) to go get a replacement.

I notice all replacements that I could see have done away with the clean-out at the bottom of the P-trap. Makes sense, since the whole trap is easy to remove if necessary. Eliminates the natural collection point at the bottom.

Eddie, I am the only owner of this house, but yes, I have used drain cleaners on occasion. The kitchen sink gets the most use of any of the four that I have, so I guess it was just due. Thought about using plastic, but didn't want to take the chance that it might not fit tight; all the PVC ones at the HD store were a tad different in style from the original. The only thing that worries me is that the original was "Made In USA 28 ga." That replacement, I'll bet, is made in China and thinner....

tungularafishcamp-- I haven't been surprised like that for quite a while, though we do have a few black bears around here. The one time I got real worried was when a moose surprised me at the edge of our lawn... they sometimes do NOT run away when encountering a human, and I was 50 yards away from the house... I'm too old for the 50-yard dash!!:laughing:

Irving, at least it was a p-trap that you can easily find at the store. My wife told me I had a drip under the sink and I found it was the $300+ Price-Pfister faucet quick connect that seals with o-rings around a copper tube, and was corroded. It took me two weeks and several calls to customer service to get the parts that finally fixed my faucet. I'm careful not to disturb the pipes under the sink too much even now. I have to admit that all the parts were free and shipped free, but I think I can come up with something a lot more reliable and not as expensive.

Ouch, Jinman!! Thanks- I feel much better now. It really didn't take too long, and I was thinking I was lucky to get a repair part so easily.:)

Not very pretty, but there it is....:p

And the time limits wont be that long this time! If you got 20 yrs outta heat pump and washer dryer you did good! My bearings in my washer are getting loud, probably not worth fixing and i know its not 10 years old yet, but i got it second hand and have had it maybe 4 years. The dryer is has a bad thermostat or something it gets so hot you cant touch it, yep again around 10 yrs. I just replaced my diswasher which was a bit over 3 yrs old. Things wont last that long this time around. Thats also why you want the PVC p-trap it should last longer than that.

When I built my house 15 years ago, by the time plumbing trim out came around we were mighty thin of the building fund $$$. I didn't scrimp on the faucets or other visible items, but i did on the hidden items like P traps. I was going to buy the nice shiny brass or chrome ones, but the cheap plastic ones won out as the money savings was tremendous. I had to scrimp where i could.

15 years later there still working like new...and still look new. Plastic is good for something i guess.
