My Son\'s Christmas Tractor

OK, I'm really just testing my Christmas present (digital camera). Note that my son's tractor is <font color=green>green</font color=green>/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Re: My Son\'s Christmas Tractor

I guess you got the hang of it. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Your son tractor reminds me of the old Oliver 99 Turbo. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Have a safe and Happy New Years.

Re: My Son\'s Christmas Tractor

Are you talking about the GM diesel in the oliver? That was a wonderful sound when that engine was fired up. Also JD had the 435 with the GM diesel in it. Never really figure out how they fitted that engine in there but it worked.

Re: My Son\'s Christmas Tractor

Robert,
Maybe you could shed some light. The Oliver had a 99 turbo..was it Massey who had the 98 turbo, just about the same year..for I can't recall.
Both tractors have <font color=red>strong<font color=red><font color=black> low end pulling, but the JD 720 propane sure could keep up w/them.

Re: My Son\'s Christmas Tractor

Do you know why the JD 435 had such a short life span...for it had the hp also a good all purpose tractor round the farm.

Re: My Son\'s Christmas Tractor

Massey had the 98 with a GM diesel from 58 -62. Oliver had the Super 99 from 55-58. As for the 435 it was in production until the 1010 came out then it and the 430 stoped, but actually the 435 tooling went to Argentina and was built for a few more years as the 445. As for pulling I have a friend who has a couple 730's and 830's and he swears his 730's will out pull the 830's. The 730 is a fun tractor and not much different than a 720. We really do not have many propane tractors here and I do not know much about them as most of them were sold in the mid-west. The only propane tractors I have seen at shows were bought from the midwest and most of them were Minne Mo's.

Re: My Son\'s Christmas Tractor

Thanks for the info Robert.
I didn't know nor seen a propane Modine.
I guess Farmall kinda lack in raw lugging horse power like the Oliver & Massey &JD of that time,by this I mean Farmall was little behind the eight ball..if you will.

Both Oliver and Massey are darn good tractors, but if it came right down to a pull off w/both tractor tune and equal weight,I feel Massey has the edge /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif..and your thoughts sir?? /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

You indeed have alot of knowledge on yesterday tractors,in which one could kick back and enjoy w/a cup of coffee..or maybe w/some dandy lion wine. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Re: My Son\'s Christmas Tractor

With out a doubt Massey would win in equal competition, only problem is there do not seem to be too many Massey laying around. Antique tractors is one of my favorite hobby's and I try to learn as much as I can from other people I meet at shows. We have a couple of brothers that live near me that have over 100 tractors. They completely restore 4-5 tractors each year from the ground up and sell off a couple to buy more, I have learned a lot from these guys as they build a lot of their own parts and have the equipment to make their own sheet metal as they showed me how to make orchard tin for a JD 60. They started building minatures and have a full size MF 50 along with a 1/2 scale Narrow front MF 50 and a 1/2 scale wide front MF 50. Do you make it to many shows? I was at the John Deere Expo in Canadaigua last year and hope to make it to Michigan for the National Two Cylinder Expo. This 720lp High crop was at the NY show last year.

Re: My Son\'s Christmas Tractor

Robert, I saw a similar (if not the same) hi-crop tractor at the JD musuem this past summer. They had just finished an auction and the young lady was explaining to me how rare this tractor was and how much it sold for. I can't remember any details as I had a couple of kids tugging at me while she was talking. I do remember the sale amount being huge /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif

Have you ever been to the JD Commons in Moline? It was a nice visit for us. There is a complete restoration facility there with research available for owners.

A side note: I just finished a Christmas book called "Old Tractors and the Men who Own them" by Roger Welsch. Sort of a humor/philosophy/wrenching combo that I enjoyed quite a bit /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Re: My Son\'s Christmas Tractor

Your photo would be the first time I seen a 720 high crop..man that would bring big $$$ over here.

Were not as lucky to have events such as you folks, for farming not the way it use to be..almost die out.
One would have to travel to attend such great events..miles an miles, but our country fairs do bring a lot of yesterday tractors to events.

By the sounds you and your brothers found your nack in life, and what a rewarding life it must be.

I do love those old tractor pull, like my better have said to me last year "haven't you had enought..its been 7 hours"

Take care and stay warm out there.
