My 25 year old son was pulled over today by the Summit County Sheriff's Department. Seems he was tipping the brown bottle while he was driving. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

After the officer checked his drivers license he said, "Mr. Ebner do you know why I pulled you over today?"

no sir.......

You were seen tipping up a brown bottle and I see other open containers in your vehicle as well.

I have to admit some guilt here officer as I was drinking beer while driving.

My son handed one of the half finished bottles to the Officer and offered him a drink as well.

At first the officer didn't see any humor in the gesture until he noticed that the brown glass bottles contained IBH root beer, my son's favorite beverage of choice.

My son did offer to undergo the alcohol testing if it was necessary too.

Will, my son actually got a bit of a smile from the officer as his ID was handed back to him. The officer then told Will to have a good day and it was all over.

Don't know if someone reported him using a cell phone or if the squad car actually saw Will tip the bottle but it still makes me feel darn good that the police are out there protecting us from those that might actually cause us harm because of alcohol and driving related accidents.

I do have to wonder if the officer will get any ribbing from his colleges for making a root beer bust though. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Mike; Nice story. Round here the guy getting stopped would inform the cop how stupid he is. I don't buy that attitude by the way. Obviously you raised your kid right. And even has a sense of humor. And you say he's only 25? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Mike,

I'll be the first to join you being against driving while impared. Be it a legal drug like alcohol or anything else.

But tipping one brown bottle while driving, be it rootbeer or whatever, is not the issue and to me I have to admit that sometimes I wonder if while Russia is becoming more like us, if we are not at the same time becoming more like they USED to be... /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Glad to hear it was rootbeer he was drinking though...makes for a happy ending... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

MIKE:
was it one of the good quart sized ones? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif I just picked up two today, one cream soda & one root beer. they are almost as good as the SUIOX CITY SASPRILLAS (spelling?) Something I haven't had in a long while but get them when I can find em. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

good to see that ONE COP in ohio is willing to admit to his mistakes, so far all the ones I've met will trump up something if they think the first thing won't stick.

Ohh, they have good soda in bottles now ?!?! ... I thought a guy had to surrender his home brewery to the "kids" to make decent soft drinks ... by the 5 gal keg of course. ... It's funny how things are different, yet the same ... a good soda, as a good wine, or beer ... or hooch, ... or food ... needs to breathe. Suggest to your son to pull off the road, pour the root beer into a nice solid stainless mug, then enjoy the drive and the beverage ... let the CO2 do the work it was intended to do without the constraints of a bottle ...mmmmmm

Mark the brown glass root beer bottles are the same size as a standard beer bottle and without a paper label so the bottles do look very suspicious. When my son got out of his car he was still drinking one and I have to admit that I didn't give him the benefit of the doubt. I thought he was drinking beer also and told him that he knows better. That's when he handed me the bottle and told me the whole story. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

HomeBrew2 guess I never thought about telling Will to pour the root beer in a McDonald's cup sometimes when I get rattled the mind doesn't think clear again until it settles down, maybe I blew it here as a parent.......

Henro yes we were very thankful that it was only pop that he was drinking today. Will does have a real drink from time to time (maybe more that I care to know) but to this point in time he's always used his head. Even called me one night from a friends to come get him since he had too much to drink and didn't want to drive home drunk. Made me proud that night too he did. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Calls like those are what makes a parent feel good. Many kids would not call their parents in a case like that...unfortunately...for whatever reason.

If only more did maybe we would hear less about those late night accidents...over a bank, into a tree...

Sounds like you and your boy have a good relationship. Can't ask for more than that.

Glad to see this took a different turn than the title suggested.

Pineridge, this reminded me of your other ordeal with Ohio's finest. How did you fare with that one, since you were technically not driving on your expired drivers license, but were issued a ticket anyway?

Thanks,

two quick stories along these same lines

One was when I was working night shift and had to go throught the toll booth at some odd hour of the a.m. on the way home. I had a soda between my legs as I pulled throught the toll booth and there was a state trooper there because the toll operator was counting money putting it in a deposit bag for collection. I guess the trooper seen the top of the can and after I got down the road about a mile or so he must have got to thinking he better check it out. I think he just wanted an excuse to use the lights and drive fast /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif because he could have asked while I was at the toll booth. anyway after getting a mile or so down the road I seen him coming up in the rearview so I pulled over to let him go by /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif to my suprise he pulled in behind me, got out asked me what was in the can, I showed it to him and he let me go on down the road.

The 2nd story involved the Brown rootbeer bottles. The brand name was DADS and it was in the brown bottle like IBC is.

I got my sister so wound up one afternoon I got home before she did and I had stopped and bought a 6 pack of the DADS rootbeer and was sitting at the kitchen table drinking away when she got home from school.

Man she was gunna tell Mom and Dad blah blah blah /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I just kept grinnin and telling her "don't worry Sis, it's DADS" I know it is she kept saying and you are gunna be in big trouble too, ahahahaa Finally offered her one and told her to taste it, "It was DADS" she kept telling me NO she wasn't gunna get in trouble too. I finally got to laughing and couldn't stop, of course this made it worse as she then thought I was really drunk. But I finally confessed it was DADS ROOT beer.

I had a similar thing happen to me once. I was pulled over by a state cop who thought my diet coke can looked like a Coors Light can. Ironically Coors Light is my beer of choice when I have one or two but this time it wasn't.

Good to hear he called you once to get home rather than drive himself. My dad always told me I coudl do that, I never did, i should have alot, I didn't. By the grace of God nobody ever got hurt, and yes I would do it differently.
