I just bought a new PT422 and experienced the same problem. The first time I used the 60 inch mower, the PTO stopped working about the third time I turned it on. PowerTrac sent me a new solenoid. Finally was able to mow the lawn, well almost... I ran out of gas.

This is a great machine.

jj I think it is good to remind people not to turn the pto on unless there is an attachment connected to it, it could do damage to the machine and could even be dangerous. I figure that everyone knows this but in case soemone doesn't I would like to add that when you do attach an emplement to the pto give a gentle tug on the hose to make sure that the coupling has fully connected just on appearance it may look connected but may not be fully engaged, this will cause the same symtoms and make you get heart sick wondering what is the matter .
