My ol\' JD hay rake..........

Some might remember some pictures I posted here a while ago of a hay baler and hay rake that I was given in trade for hauling some other old equipment off. I was pretty sure I could get both of them going again but when I found them they were totally covered in vines with only their hitches showing. I have the baler functioning just like it should now but I don't have much paint on it so i won't show it yet. Now the rake on the other hand...I did a little work on it (it was totally frozen up, gearbopx was full of rust, etc.) and painted it. I finally got to try it out a couple days ago, just ran it through some tall, snowy grass to give it a little work out. Here is a before picture just after I pulled it off the trailer and dropped it at my grandparent's farm and Here is the after picture from a couple days ago. It's by no means a show piece, just a piece of equipment to work on the farm but now it can actually do it's job again. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif -phillip

Re: My ol\' JD hay rake..........

Looks like it was a fun project. I have a sickle mower I need to rebuild for my Farmall. This is giving me some gumption to get going on it /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: My ol\' JD hay rake..........

That's quite a transformation for that rake. It's pleasing to see a piece of equipment go from being thrown away to being used again. It's like farm machinery rescue.

Nice job on refurbishing the rake.

Now -- could you produce the same type of results with my aging old body? It's starting to look like the rake before you started.

Re: My ol\' JD hay rake..........

It has worked out pretty well for the rake. Everything was locked up solid when I got it. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif I put some new tires on it, took the gearbox apart and cleaned everything up, knocked all the rust off of it, painted it up, now it's working fine. Just need 2 u joints and two bearings and it's be working just right-no problems at all. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif -Phillip

I suspect that after the sand blasting, your body would be even worse for wear.

You will find that model rake is one of the few pull rakes that can properly and gently rake alfalfa without stripping all the leaves off and won't "rope" the windrow badly. It's the only rack that can rake pinto beans together after cutting and drying for combining that won't shell the pods. JD never built a right hand model but I'm going to modify one so I have two rakes to rake two rows into one. The power rakes are to expensive for me.
