Several, all used and abused.
I wanted to share with everyone the computer I just bought. I used to be a Dell guy for years and years. I've bought four desk tops, and one lap top. At first, there wasn't anything to compare to them, but now it seems they have gone the way of all the other manufacturers with lousy costomer support and top price compared to similar machines.

When I wanted to upgrade from my last Dell two years ago, I went to the store and read the reviews in several different PC magazines. Gateway was rated very highly in several magazines, and Best Buy had it in stock. That was the worse computer and biggest waste of money that I've spent in a very long time!!!!

I learned two things. Never buy a Gateway and NEVER trust the reviews in a PC magazine.

HP has always disapointed me in printers. I have one now, and it's OK, but the main reason I bought it was the price and there really isn't anything else to chose from from. Because I consider HP middle of the line and more of a Walmart type brand, I wanted to avoid them.

While at Best Buy, I went online in the store and did a search on Amazon for computers and started reading reviews. I never heard of Lenovo before and dismissed it right off while in the store. I thought it was another Acer type brand. The reviews shocked me. All VERY GOOD. The more I read, the more I liked it. Seems that IBM got out of the PC market and Lenovo took it over. It's not an IBM, but what used to be IBM is now been upgraded and coming on strong as the new brand of PC with the new company name.

For $545 after tax, I have this machine.

Lenovo - Ideacentre Desktop / Intel® Core™ i3 Processor / 8GB Memory / 1TB Hard Drive - 77471CU

It is extremly fast, simple and best of all, totally quiet!!!! I mean you don't hear anything. No hum, no spinning, NOTHING.

I've only had it a day, so this might be a big premature, but compared to everything else that I've ever bought, this is in a league all to itself.

Sounds like a pretty good deal for the horsepower. I have had most of the brands you mentioned and the outcomes have been "OK". I will build my next one the way I want it for sure.

Your 1,000% right about the customer service too.

BTW, I use Tom's Hardware: Hardware News, Tests and Reviews and http://hardforum.com/ for research and QA, the guys on these two forums are some smart fellas, I also read all the reviews from every source I can then "take a shot in the dark" Nothing worse than PC trouble , especially if you use it for small business as I do.

Good luck with your new toy Eddie!

Thanks Dennis,

I've had issue after issue with the Gateway. I pay to get it fixed, and six months later, it's something else. I've probably spent over $300 fixing things, including a new power supply over the summer.

I'm becoming very dependent on reading the reviews on Amazon. That seems to be where I get the good and the bad. And even with the bad, there are sometimes enough comments to weed out the nuts and those with an agenda.

I'll be adding my review there pretty soon. I want to give it a week or so first.

Eddie, I , like you always had Dell and HP printers for the price...about a year ago when my Dell died after 7 yrs...( I have to give them credit for that ) I saw their prices were high compared to what was available ..so I bought a simple emachine...desktop...for about $300 - it has all the bells and whistles I need and has worked flawlessly for 1 yr. now...

I think you got a great deal for that nice a computer...I bet the comparable Dell would be twice that amount or more..Isn't it fun....joking here...setting up a new computer...

I don't know that brand, in particular...but I know they sell them on TigerDirect.
Best of luck with the machine!!

Lenovo makes a decent machine, and that is coming from a Mac guy.

Lenovo is the brand that used to be IBM. IBM sold off their desktop/laptop computer business a few years ago to Lenovo.

My biggest "grip" with a boxed PC's is usually the inferior components based more on price points, or the upgrade path is limited to mostly proprietary routes, though some are better.

Like the problem you had Eddie with the power supply, likely they skimped in that department which can cause all kinds of problems and failures. 2 boxed PC's I have bought, I had to change the PSU's, just to upgrade the video cards!

I have even read there is a big difference in OEM products vs aftermarket, same component but different specks and diff $$. Boxed will usually go with cheaper version of said component.

I have had the best luck with Canon printer/scanner so far, but I imagine there is a lot of variables with each printer and how each of us use them.
