This happens to cars too. If the coolant drains out fast, because a hose breaks, or falls off, the gauge won't read high. It seems silly to think you wouldn't know it happened. But sometimes it does. It happened to my endurance race car when a teammate was driving. Debris knocked a hose off. No high reading on the gauge, but the engine seized.

Checked at dealer today. New engine bolted in, and reassembly underway. Will probably be ready by end of week, since Monday is a holiday.
