My Industrial Cabin Build

We got hit pretty hard last week here in East Texas. Everything closed down for two days, and the panic shopping stripped the shelves at Walmart. My hot tub gazebo shows just how bad it got!!!!

No snow guards here. Never even heard of them. We just let it build up and hope for the best. :)

If it all comes down at once it can smash your windows out. Or kill someone.

OK. We've never had a problem with either. It slides off before the build-up gets that large. If we let it accumulate without sliding off, it would be 3+ feet deep and one heck of a snow load. But it snows a lot more here than in VA.

The problem with VA and the mid-Atlantic region in general is the type of winter precipitation that we get. We don't get light, powdery, dry snow here all the time. Occasionally we get powder, but most often we get a heavy moisture laden snow that leads to the disaster that was the I-95 debacle.

We also routinely get these large temp swings before or during the storm so they start as rain, then shift to freezing rain/sleet, then snow on top of the 'cake'. And the once per decade period when we get several feet of snow - it's not feet of powder; it's mostly moisture laden heavy snow and ice that you wouldn't want to be sitting upon your roof for days. Especially if they call for additional snow load.

I was Stationed at Ft Sill, OK 50 years ago. Got 12" of snow and the Fort closed. Lawton also closed. I was highly amused. :)

Those snow guards look really good. Will they stop the snow from doing any more damage to your stove pipe? I was surprised by how it looked in your video!!!

I was also surprised by your vent pipes coming through the roof without any flashing. Did you just use caulking or silicone to seal around them?

In my opinion, you really need to install vent pipe flashing. OATEY Master Flash 6 in. x 6 in. Vent Pipe Roof Flashing with 4/5 in. - 4 in. Adjustable Diameter 14051 - The Home Depot

I bought those same flashings for the pipes. My roofer did it the way I showed. I plan to put ice/snow diverter in front of the pipes and will be keeping a close eye on them. I will probably end ip putting the flashing on and sealing it to the metal roof.
The snow guards will help keep the snow from flowing down our roof. Buy the diverter is the best defense. It is probably overkill but I always go for the overkill. I am having issues getting my materials together for them but I’ll be installing them.

I was surprised the roofer didn’t flash the vents better.

Got those snow guards done in time, you will test them tonight.

I dont expect much accumulation of snow today. Too warm. It was 60 degrees yesterday and it is 34 right now.
Yesterday, I was getting the excavator running. I had previously had a fuel/water issue. After sitting for a long time. The water settled out and I was able to drain it off yesterday. I put the batteries back inAnd it started right up. I had been dreading it and expected to have to drain the fuel and take it to the recycling station. I will need that excavator because i need to get the well line in.
The electrician came and installed the panels and we are approved for early service. So I need to get ready for that. I have some dirt work I need to do behind the house, get that back area and slope the way I want it I plan to put in a retaining wall and want to get all my digging done before they trench for electric.
I never knew how beautiful a meter box could be.
