Thanks Jbird, it's my first heater install so hoping I won't regret not spending the money for a professional install. I got two quotes from local HVAC guys that quoted me the same unit including install, one just under $7000 and the other just over! My cost is about $2K. Neither includes the propane tank but that cost is fixed regardless. Being a DIY kind of guy, there was no way I was gonna pay $5K for a day of their work. It's been a bit of a struggle since it is the first time for me but not too bad because I had all the tools I needed. Happy so far... stay tuned.

The savings aspect must make you smile every time you walk into your shop! You will be looking forward to the winter now!

I think you will be happy with that set up. I have a 125000 BTU Hot Dawg heater in a 36' X52' building. I have a 250 gal LP tank also and only have to fill it once during the winter. I leave the thermostat set on 46 degrees unless I am working in it. I did insulate with the same specs as if it was a house, 6" walls and 18" ceiling. Enjoy your heated work shop.

Good to hear... I will be blowing in lots of insulation in the rafters as there is zero insulation now. Might try to access the walls from the outside at some point to fill in between the joists. Whole thing is sheet rocked.

Interesting thread. I'm really shocked at how much profit the HVAC companies wanted to make off of your install.

Eddie, that seems to be a trend here in the Puget Sound area. I paid $7K to replace a forced air gas furnace. Furnace value was only $2.5K. We were in the process of moving in so bit the bullet as I did not have the time to do it myself, which I could have. I have a unit heater like Dragoneggs' I need to install for next winter, natural gas here. I have the skills and tools, just need to get to it. Planning to do an on-demand condensing water heater next year that I was quoted $6.5K for a unit that I can buy for less than $2K. Labor is expensive here but not that much. Most shops estimate at $125/hr for labor cost. That's almost double their book cost.
